One person has died, with at least 37 others sustaining injuries, following a fatal accident in Suhum Mankrong on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region.
Reports suggest that the incident occurred on Sunday, 11 January.
The accident occurred between a 40-seater Zhong Tong bus with registration number AS 7022-21 and a Man Diesel truck with registration number GW 3969-U.
According to eyewitnesses, the 40-seater Zhong Tong bus was travelling at high speed when it collided with the truck.
Reports suggest that 21 male and 17 female passengers in the bus were injured, with occupants of the truck escaping unhurt.
ADO II Bernard Boamah, leading the GNFS rescue crew, arrived at the scene at 7:07 a.m.
The deceased and injured were extracted from the wreckage and taken to the Suhum Government Hospital.
“The front of the bus was extensively damaged, indicating the severity of the impact, while the rear of the truck sustained minor damage. Our team worked swiftly to ensure the safety of road users and provide timely assistance to the victims,” ADO II Boamah stated.
In related accident news, six people have been confirmed dead following a tragic accident involving an aboboyaa (tricycle) and a timber truck.
According to reports, the road accident occurred at Sehwi Asikuma in the Bia West District of the Western North Region.
The information gathered suggests the accident occurred when an aboboyaa, carrying the rider and seven market women, collided head-on with a timber-laden truck.
Eyewitnesses revealed the timber truck was speeding, which forced the aboboyaa rider to swerve, but the truck rammed the tricycle with full force despite the rider’s attempts to avoid the collision.
The collision killed six occupants of the aboboyaa on the spot, with two women sustaining life-threatening.
They were rushed to the Essam Cocoa to receive urgent treatment.
According to reports, the Aboboyaa driver fled the scene of the collision and is yet to be traced. The driver of the timber truck is helping the Police with their probe.
The Ghana Police and emergency responders are said to have transported the injured to the hospital, with the deceased being deposited at the morgue.
The Police have since launched an investigation into the tragic accident to ascertain the cause of the collision.
