The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) task force has arrested some 15 drivers for charging multiple fares at Ablekuma, Accra.
The 15 drivers in Ablekuma, Accra, were arrested for allegedly charging multiple fares.
According to the GPRTU, the task force is also targeting drivers who operate short trips who move passengers between points without completing the full route.
Derumond Ekow Gaise, the National Guard Commander of the GPRTU, confirmed the news.
Speaking to JoyNews on January 21, Derumond Ekow Gaise stated, “This is part of the tougher steps we are taking to curb illegal operations by drivers.”
“Even if you call yourself a union, your members are us. You have to call us and negotiate. They did not call me for the meeting yesterday,” he added.
“Operations now are targeting those who take passengers short distances while claiming longer routes, and those who charge over their approved fares. When the police take them to court, it will help enforce discipline,” he said.
Some arrested drivers have described their arrests as unjustified.
One driver told JoyNews, “They arrested me because I am charging unapproved fees. That is not true. I haven’t charged anyone double fare. Even if you call yourself a union, your members are us. You have to call us and negotiate. They did not call me for the meeting yesterday”.
Meanwhile, Godfred Abulbire, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had earlier announced plans to deploy a task force to deal with drivers charging exorbitant fares.
According to the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, the enforcement exercise is expected to begin on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Godfred Abulbire highlighted that the Union will deploy it personnel at known locations where drivers exploit passengers.
Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, January 18, Godfred Abulbire stated, “What the drivers fear is banning them from loading. We have our own task force to ensure that they can’t go anywhere.
From what we have discussed, we have decided that on Monday, we will deploy most of our guys to all the vantage points where these exploitations take place to check if indeed these are our cars or not”.
“We will begin to brand our cars with GPRTU on them. If we see that you then go out to exploit people, we will fish you out and then take you out of the union,” he added.
