Polls have officially opened in the Ayawaso East by-election as constituents vote to elect a new member of parliament today, March 3, 2026.
Reports suggest that about 49,966 voters are expected to head to the polls today.
The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the death of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana have also assured residents of a smooth and orderly voting process.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 2, EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, stated, “This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision”.
The Ayawaso East by-election is proceeding following the Accra High Court’s throwing out a suit filed by the Democracy Hub seeking to halt the March 3 Ayawaso East by-election over Baba Jamal’s alleged vote-buying during the NDC’s primary.
It will be recalled that the Pressure Group Democracy Hub had earlier filed a lawsuit at the High Court in Accra seeking to halt the upcoming Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election.
According to the Democracy Hub, NDC’s Ayawaso East primaries were characterised by widespread vote buying, inducement, and monetisation, which they argued undermines democratic principles enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The Democracy Hub lawsuit stems from the alleged vote-buying during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries held on February 7, 2026.
The pressure group lists NDC as the first defendant, with the Electoral Commission (EC) as the second, and the Attorney-General as the third.
However, Lawyers for the NDC filed a preliminary objection asking the court to strike out the suit, arguing that it was incompetent and defective.
The Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Agyenim-Boateng, in his ruling upheld the preliminary objection and set aside the originating processes.
Meanwhile, Global InfoAnalytics has projected that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, will win the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.
According to Global InfoAnalytics, Baba Jamal is projected to secure 75 per cent in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election slated for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The Global InfoAnalytics added that the poll was conducted between February 28 and March 1, sampling 972 voters across the constituency.
In a post shared by Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, read, “In the final poll for the Ayawaso East by-election, NDC’s Baba Jamal is likely to win with 75% of the votes, slightly better than what the former MP secured in the 2024 parliamentary elections. Hon Naser Toure secured nearly 71% of the votes, and NPP’s Zak Rahman, 29%.
The NPP is likely to underperform in the by-election as Baba Ali is predicted to secure only 21%, representing a drop of nearly 8% compared to the 2024 results.
Umaru Sanda Muhammed, an independent candidate who defected from the ruling NDC, is poised to secure a meagre 3% of the votes.
The poll was conducted between 28th Feb-1st March 2026 with a sample of 972 voters with 95% confidence level and +-3.05% margin of error”.
