A throwback video of Kennedy Agyapong has surfaced on social media, with the NPP presidential aspirant boldly revealing how he took businessman Ibrahim Mahama to court to pay the state some 14 million cedis in 2017.
Back in 2017, then Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, had, for several weeks, alleged that Mr Mahama issued dud cheques to the Customs Division of the GRA.
He further led a media crusade, agitating that EOCO should investigate Mr Ibrahim.
Ibrahim Mahama was later ordered to pay approximately GH¢13 million in import duties and interest after issuing dud cheques.
According to reports, payments were made in May 2017, though the amount is often rounded to GH¢14 million.
In Ghanaian laws, it is an offence to issue a cheque, knowing very well that you do not have sufficient funds in your account.
Appearing in an exclusive interview on TV3 New Day, Kennedy Agyapong was asked why he had not jailed Ibrahim Mahama as he had promised to do.
According to Ken Agyapong, Mahama and his brother went behind the big Chiefs to beg him not to jail his brother.
He recounted that Ibrahim Mahama was not paying import duties on machines he was clearing from the port because his brother was president at the time.
Speaking on TV3 New Day, he explained, “He is a friend, but I always speak the truth; the level of dishonesty in our culture is why we have to change some of our culture.
I took Ibrahim to court, and he paid GHS14 million. Do you remember? You know he was not paying duties on machines that were being cleared from the port, even on Sundays, because his brother was the president.
I challenged him and gave evidence, and Ibrahim Mahama went to court to pay 14 million. So, what have I done to the nation, and he went out there begging, so I am surprised that President Mahama is saying that I have not been able to jail his brother when they went behind big chiefs to come and beg for him”.
Some netizens reacting to the news stated, “Ken Agyapong is lying here, he didn’t take Ibrahim Mahama to court, it was EOCO which investigated him in 2017 and found he issued dud cheques which failed. He agreed with the GRA and paid 12m cedis on his mining equipment that he didn’t pay duties on”.
“But, you went begging when you were fine by an American court?”, a netizen added.
“This interview and the comments section show the hypocrisy of Ghanaians in shielding the crimes of persons we like. Somebody wrote so what”, a netizen added.
One X user added, “Who are you to jail anyone? What position did you occupy in that government to have the power to jail anyone? This one who said if he were president, he would ask police to beat up journalists, is the one wanting to be president today”
An X user added, “Rich man no dey pay duty..but poor people have their assets siezed if Dem no meet deadline for port”.
