Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, a senior Advisor to the 2025 Bawumia Campaign, has said the former vice president and presidential aspirant, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, exhibits similar traits to President Mahama.
He highlighted that Dr Bawumia exhibits Mahama’s traits of humility, calmness, and accessibility, which resonate with Ghanaians.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo stated, “I am very happy with the way the campaign, the messaging, and his consistency have gone. If you listen to Bawumia in Cape Coast and then meet him in Yendi, you will hear the same message.
“He’s very consistent. People are beginning to see a consistent presidential candidate, a person who is very knowledgeable, very humble, very calm, who is the type of president Ghanaians are looking for”.
“You cannot describe Mahama [President] without talking about the fact that he is indeed a gentle president, and that is the type of mellowness Ghanaians are looking for. People are looking for a candidate who is very accessible, a person who listens. One of the things we have done in opposition as a party is we listen”, he added.
Anthony Abayifaa Karbo further asserted that Galamsey, DDEP, global crisis contributed to the NPP’s 2024 defeat.
He rejected allegations that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was the wrong candidate for the NPP.
Karbo stated, “I’m strongly opposed to that view. If you have done a post-mortem of the 2024 polls across the world, you would have known that all or many incumbent governments that were going for a re-election in that particular year lost and lost heavily,” he said.
According to him, the NPP lost largely because of the difficult economic conditions in Ghana.
He added, “We were also reeling under the huge economic problems in Ghana. You recall the DDEP, galamsey, and all these things added to the difficulties we had in the election.
“We cannot run away from that fact. And it doesn’t make the candidate a wrong choice. Ghanaians were tuned off, with all the good ideas we talked about, we didn’t get the attention,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, the Member of Parliament for Karaga, has warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it could end up in opposition for 12 years.
Amin Adam stressed that the NPP could be in opposition for 12 years if they are not careful and engage in experimentation.
The former finance minister cited historical trends within the NPP when the party allowed Kufuor and Akufo-Addo to run again despite their previous defeat.
According to Amin Adam, the NDC can afford to experiment because they will have the resources and the backing of President Mahama.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News on Wednesday, January 7, Dr Amin Adam stated, “We repeated Kufuor and Akufo-Addo for a second time, and they won, so why shouldn’t we repeat Bawumia for the second time? If we put Bawumia forth the first time and he lost, do we want to experiment with another candidate and risk losing against the opposition?”
“Mahama is not going to contest again, but he will support their candidate because they have the resources. If we are not careful and engage in experimentation, even when the NDC experiments by bringing a new candidate, and they win, we could be in opposition for 12 years.
“If we make that mistake, we will likely remain in opposition for 12 years, and by the end of 12 years, we will not have a party,” he said.
