US gov’t will not stand in Ghana’s way to extradite Ofori‑Atta and Sedina Tamakloe – Ablakwa

NewsUS gov’t will not stand in Ghana’s way to extradite Ofori‑Atta and Sedina Tamakloe – Ablakwa

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, has announced that the United States government will not stand in Ghana’s way in the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta and former MASLOC boss Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the moves form part of Ghana’s ongoing bilateral cooperation with the United States.

Ablakwa, in a post on X, stated, “Ghana and the United States applauded our improved security and law enforcement cooperation, leading to the extradition of 9 suspects from Ghana to the USA in 2025, and the ongoing commendable efforts to also send over 2 Ghanaians of high interest from the US to Ghana.”

“The United States Government has assured that, without prejudice to judicial processes, it will not stand in the way of Ghana as  regards the removal of Ken Ofori‑Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.”

In the meantime,  Ken Ofori-Atta is being held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia by ICE.

Also, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has announced that embattled former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, will appear before an immigration judge on January 20, 2025.

Then from there to the United States Supreme Court. That is potentially the legal pathway to the determination as to whether or not he should be taken from America. If he doesn’t self-deport, this is what is going to happen.

“In the extradition case, again, a district court will hear the proceedings and make a determination as to whether to extradite him. If he’s not happy about that, he can go to a circuit court of appeal and to the United States of America,” he explained.

In the case of Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, she has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a High Court in Accra.

The former MASLOC CEO was sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour for causing financial loss of GH¢90 million to the state in April 2024.

In 2019, the case began; however, during the course of the trial, Sedina Tamakloe travelled to the United States to seek medical attention.

Sedina Tamakloe was tried in absentia after failing to return to Ghana.

A former Chief Operating Officer of MASLOC, Daniel Axim, was also sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour.

Sedina Tamakloe and Daniel Axim were found guilty on 78 counts of causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and causing loss to public property in violation of public procurement law.

Meanwhile, the AG has announced that the extradition process against Sedina Tamakloe Attionu is done.

Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, addressing the country during the Government Accountability Series on Thursday, December 18, 2025, stated, “I did indicate to Parliament that in July 2025, a formal request for her extradition was put in by my predecessors, in other words, by my office. The American authorities have worked on her extradition. The extradition proceedings have taken place in the US, and we’re expecting that barring any appeal by her lawyers, she may be very soon extradited to Ghana to serve her prison term”.

“I don’t have any definitive information on when she will be extradited, but the Americans have indicated that they’ve completed the process,” he said.
