Julius Neequaye Kotey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said if the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Volta River Authority (VRA) can establish a hospital, what prevents DVLA from doing same for drivers.

According to the DVLA CEO, their aim is to  establish a driver’s hospital as part of a welfare initiative for transport operators.

He highlighted that the organisation will construct a hospital for drivers by the end of the year.

The DVLA CEO further detailed that the hospital will focus on bone issues for drivers.

Speaking to the media, Julius Neequaye Kotey stated, “If Bank of Ghana can establish a hospital, the Volta River Authority (VRA) can establish a hospital, what prevents DVLA from also doing same for drivers, because for all you know the proceeds we get from drivers we always give 85 per cent of it to road fund and road contruction.

We can aswell go into private program to contruct a befitting hospital with a specification to driving aspect that is bone issues for drivers. That is what we are aiming at, going by the end of the year, that we will also have the drivers hospital, which will be managed and championed by the DVLA”, he added.

The proposal by the DVLA boss has since triggered public debate with some netizen saying, “Fools and lost priorities! Why not advocate for quality dual roads everywhere to reduce the unnecessary deaths? Drivers hospitals, big fool”.

“Country of dreamers. What don’t we know about priorities . Establish a forensics unit that can investigate crashes and help bring to account reckless driving . Upgrade your services digitally to make life easier for the Ghanaian people. Always dreaming about useless initiatives”, another netizen added.

A netizen added, “Hospital for themselves whiles charging exorbitant prices to the public? Anyway, I feel this is misplaced”.

“To the Npp this is what we call an initiative not purchasing  some 40 busses at an overly inflated cost to the state. Kudos to DVLA as an institution, I pray it comes into manifestations not just Accra but the entire 16 regions. Akpe Akpe Akpe  @JDMahama”. One more X user stated.

“These facilities aren’t free when accessed by the workers of those institutions . The GPRTU must do better. What do they use the loading fees they take from the drivers for? They have no pension scheme, no welfare benefits, not even legal representation by the association”, one X user added.

A Ghanaian noted, “This man is always looking at procuring something for chop chop. So many problems to fix at DVLA but it’s hospital you want to build. He needs Reseting!”

“I think the DVLA has more pressing issues to address beyond building hospitals which should come as a tertiary matter to their outfit”, another X user added.

Additionally one more Ghanaian added, “Common Registration plate you can’t prove for those who have registered their cars this year but you are here talking about building drivers hospitals hmmm Ama Ghana”.
