Sammi Awuku, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and a key figure in the Bawumia campaign, has made a shocking claim regarding the current state of Ghana.

According to Sammi Awuku, the Ghanaians are reaping the benefits of initiatives led by former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NPP MP is quoted by UTV Ghana to have said, Ghanaians are reaping the benefits of initiatives led by Dr Bawumia during his time as Vice President”.

Sammi Awuku’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some netizens saying, “But if the dollar goes up, NDC loses IMF. Give us a break and go rebuild the mighty npp”

A netizen added, “I’m getting confused with my own @nppghanahq and@Mbawumia Is the economy going well OR bad? We’re too divided, why? In one breath, the economy is hard under @JDMahama, then the achievements of the @OfficialNDCGh and @JDMahama are the initiative of @MBawumia. Like how?”.

One X user added, “@DennisMiracles@Gen_Buhari_and some comedians are saying the country is hard”

“So it’s no more: He was sidelined. He was just the mate. He was not handling the economy. He was not the finance minister. Every good thing that happened was by Bawums, but the bad ones were Addo Dee and Ken Ofori Atta, Russian Ukrainian war, Covid 19…. Yate wai, 2028 b3ba p3333”, an X user asserted.

Additionally, one more Ghanaian added, “I thought Miracles Aboagye and his Bawumia cohorts say Ghana is hard. What is Sammy Awuku saying now? Is it that Ghanaians are reaping hardship as reported by Miracles?”

Meanwhile, Sammi Awuku’s claims contrast with Dennis Miracles Aboagye, who has said prices of goods and services are rising despite the fall of the US dollar to the cedi.

According to Miracles Aboagye, Ghacem, which was GH¢90 now GH¢120; roofing sheets, which were GH¢900, are now GH¢2000.

The NPP communicator asserted that when Ghanaians are complaining about the rising prices, the NDC government keeps saying the dollar has come down.

Miracles Aboagye stressed that the government needs to come clean and tell Ghanaians the truth about the rise in prices despite the appreciation of the cedi to the dollar.

Speaking at a forum assessing the government’s first year in office, dubbed the People’s Forum, Miracles Aboagye stated, “When the trotro drivers and taxi drivers complain, the NDC government says the dollar has come down. When market women complain, the government says the dollar has come down. And when unemployed teachers and nurses ask for what is due them, they are told to keep quiet because the dollar has come down”.

The view on the people’s forum is that the government needs to come clean with us; they need to tell us the truth, something is going on somewhere that they are not telling us. How is it that the dollar has come down, yet prices of day-to-day items that you and I will benefit from will go up?

They keep saying the market is wicked, the business people are wicked, and that is why they are not reducing prices”.

Miracles Aboagye further explained, “If I am a cold store owner and my import costs fall because the dollar is down, but I am paying 28% more for electricity and higher water bills, how will I reduce prices of meat or other products?” he asked.

Cement 42.5 R Ghacem, which was 90 cedis in December 2024, today it is selling between 110 and 120 cedis. Roofing sheets that were 900 cedis in 2024 are selling for 2000 cedis.

He added, “A ball of Kenkey that they campaigned with, today Kenkey is selling for 7 cedis, and other places in Koforidua, the women are telling me that they are buying Kenkey for GH¢10. A pack of bottled water that was selling for 28 cedis, it’s selling for GH¢36, sachet water was GHS 8, now GHS 10, “he said.
