Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has announced that the John Mahama government will establish three garment factories to create 27,000 jobs.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 21, the Trade Minister revealed that the government will support the private sector to establish three large garment factories.

According to the Trade Minister, the garment industry has strong job creation potential due to the large number of people and requires less training.

She explained that garment factories will strengthen the country’s industrial base.

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare stated, “I can say for a fact that 2026 even looks better. 2026 looks better because the government is going to support the private sector to establish three big garment factories, and we seek to employ 27,000 people in the long run with these garment factories.

“A garment factory employs a lot of people. The beauty is the fact that you don’t have to learn for three or five months before you get a job. So this is good,”  Minister Ofosu-Adjare stated.

Also, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has said the Trade Ministry was instrumental in the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The Trade Minister added, “Following the 10% and subsequent 15% tariff impositions by the U.S., the ministry pursued both technical and political discussions with our counterparts in the U.S. and in Ghana, with the focus on improving Ghana’s trade status with the U.S.”

“It can be recalled that AGOA ended in 2025, which meant that our ability to export duty-free and quota-free to the U.S. was no longer available. Then we had the tariff issue as well,” the minister noted.

The Trade Minister also revealed that Ghana is working through regional platforms to strengthen its position.

“There were also public communications urging exporters to remain calm, at a time when many were agitating because of the anticipated negative impact on their businesses,” she added.

She added, “The ministry played a leading role in this achievement—the extension of AGOA”.
