The Minority in Parliament, led by their leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has defended the caucus’s call for the resignation of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Addressing the press on government accountability on Monday, January 26, 2026, in answering a question asked by a media man, Ablakwa asserted that their calls for Ablakwa’s resignation were not borne out of our dislike for him.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “We in the minority don’t attack personalities. From the vetting to the house floor to all engagements, we raise issues.
How can our foreign minister have engagements with some ambassadors, write on social media and the next day, we hear of an embargo? How can you claim that Israel deported some Ghanaians, and without engaging, you also go ahead to say retaliation?” He quizzed.
He added, “If our foreign minister were that measured, he would have known that attacking Israel had consequences. So, we don’t have anything personal against anybody. In a serious democracy, when a policy fails, you resign; the minister resigns”.
“So that call on him to resign is not borne out of our dislike for him. There is a clear foreign policy failure. He’s not walked the path of his predecessors who took foreign policy measures to a higher level,” Afenyo-Markin stressed.
Meanwhile, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, a Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has fumed at the Minority in Parliament following their press conference demanding the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on January 21, 2026, Kwesi Pratt accused the minority in parliament of ignoring global diplomatic realities and Ghana’s historic role.
According to Kwasi Pratt, he is so disgusted by the minority’s press conference, noting that the Minority’s actions are misguided and damaging to Ghana’s long-standing foreign principles.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on January 21, 2026, Kwesi Pratt stated, “The Prime Minister of Britain emphasised the point that what Donald Trump had done was in violation of international law. Russia issued a strong statement claiming that what Donald Trump had done was in violation of international law. China issued a similar statement.
“Did you read the statement which was issued and signed by the Foreign Minister of Namibia? So, this minority, where have they been all these years? They don’t even read statements. They don’t read statements from the AU. They don’t read statements…”
“They are not watching what Russia’s position is. They are not watching what China’s position is. Unbelievable.”
He added, “What are the principles that the minority is upholding in this matter? I’m so disgusted by this press conference. Why? What has the foreign ministry done today? Which is in violation of Ghana’s foreign policy. Of course, if you look at the history of the minority, you may forgive them.”
