Police arrest NPP delegate

The Ghana Police Service has arrested an NPP delegate caught recording his ballot paper during the ongoing primaries.

Reports suggest the NPP delegate was arrested at Ayawaso East after he was caught recording footage of his ballot, a clear violation of voting protocols during the exercise.

In the viral video shared on X, some other delegates were seen pleading with the Police to let the arrested suspect leave.

He was, however, placed in a police vehicle and driven away.

Isaac Baah Boamah, a member of the NPP Presidential Election Committee, has said no mobile phones is allow at inner polling zones.

Speaking on Citi News on Friday, January 30, Isaac Baah Boamah stated, “The electoral officials, per the guidelines, have been told that it is a walk-in exercise. The areas will be demarcated into three sections: the outer section, the middle section, and the inner section. The outer section is where the electoral officials will identify you using your ID card for this exercise.

“We have approved four forms of identification; any one of them will be a permissible voter’s ID, party ID, national passport, or Ghana card. Any delegate without an ID cannot cast a ballot,” he explained.

“I urge every delegate to go and look for their ID card before they come to vote. When you enter the inner circle, you are not supposed to go in with any foreign material, including mobile phones,” he said.

Meanwhile, 211,849 registered NPP delegates across 16 regions of the country are voting in the keenly anticipated NPP presidential primaries.

NPP delegates from all 16 regions, and all 275 constituencies, grassroots organisers, constituency executives, and Members of Parliament are expected to vote.

Over 900 voting centres have been set up for the exercise, with voting ending at  3:00 PM, after which counting will commence immediately.

Also, a central collation centre has been established in Accra, where all certified results from each of the 275 constituencies will be transmitted for final certification and declaration.

The contest is between former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Bosomtwe MP, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, who are contesting to become the NPP flagbearer for the 2028 election.
