The former Vice President secured a commanding victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday Janurary 31, 2026.

Dr Bawumia is now set to lead the NPP in the 2028 election as they seek to regain power from the NDC.

Dr Bawumia polled 110,645, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, which was confirmed by Electoral Commission officials at the party’s headquarters.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, following provisional results that project him as the winner of the party’s flagbearer primary, has said he is really humbled that he has been elected to continue the work started.

Speaking after results from several constituencies across the country began trickling in on Saturday, January 31, Dr Bawumia stated, “Let me thank all of you. We’ve gone through a journey. It’s been a fierce battle that we’ve waged across the country, across all the regions, and we couldn’t have gotten here without the support of the team around me”.

“It is really humbling that I have been elected to continue the work they started,” he added, while also acknowledging the contribution of former Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile, 211,849 registered NPP delegates across 16 regions of the country were expected to vote in the keenly anticipated NPP presidential primaries.

NPP delegates from all 16 regions, and all 275 constituencies, grassroots organisers, constituency executives, and Members of Parliament are expected to vote.

Over 900 voting centres were set up for the exercise, with voting ending at  3:00 PM, after which counting has now commenced immediately with, a central collation centre has been established in Accra, where all certified results from each of the 275 constituencies will be transmitted for final certification and declaration.

In total, over 211,000 delegates cast their in the NPP primaries.

Also, Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, has said that when the former vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is taken out of the NPP, the party’s support in the Northern Region collapses.

According to Mussa Dankwah, the Global InfoAnalytics polls regarding the head-to-head between the NPP candidates and NDC candidates, when Bawumia is not on the ballot, the NPP sinks.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Mussa Dankwah stated, “The data shows currently if you take Dr Bawumia out of the NPP equation, their support in the Northern Region collapses, and the Northern Region is not an area that they are strong at.

So you need a figure to hold that region together, and Bawumia is the one who is doing that.

In the Akan areas, that is basically NPP’s base, even if there is a fracture at a point in time, they will come back, but when the North goes from the NPP, it will be hard for them to come back to the NPP. They think that, strategically, it is better to present Dr Bawumia again to hold the North together than ditch him and lose the Northern Region.

Mussa Dankwah added, “From the polls we have done, the scenrio what we call the head-to-head between the NPP candidates and NDC candidates, when Bawumia is not on the ballot, NPP sinks very low nationally, and that number is driven by performance in the North. So they have an eye on that data”.
