Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced his arrival in Latvia to personally lead a fact-finding mission over the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.
Ablakwa announced the visit on social media, revealing he is accompanied by a six-member delegation made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert and a pathologist.
He further revealed that the Latvian Foreign Minister has assured Ghana of her government’s full cooperation to help uncover the truth and bring closure to the bereaved family.
Ablakwa further clarified that Nana Agyei’s family, whom he invited to join his delegation could not travel with them on Saturday night due to visa issues.
He added that there has been no case of extortion or the issuance of fake tickets, adding that all delegations are fully funded by the ministry.
The Foreign Affairs minister in a post wrote, “I have arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit.
I thank the Foreign Minister of Latvia, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, for the warm reception and for the productive bilateral engagements earlier today.
As I promised Ghanaians, the main reason for requesting to pay this official visit is the distressing and unclear circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.
The Latvian Foreign Minister has conveyed firm assurances to me that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice.
I am leading a 6-member delegation made up of senior directors from the Foreign Ministry, a forensic expert and a pathologist.
Unfortunately, due to visa processing delays, the two members of Nana Agyei’s family whom I invited to join my delegation could not travel with us on Saturday night. I have been informed that their visas were issued today and, therefore, are scheduled to travel tonight so they can join us tomorrow morning.
It is worth clarifying that all family members and experts accompanying me on this delegation are fully funded by the ministry.
There has been no case of extortion or the issuance of fake tickets as has been alleged, without any evidentiary basis whatsoever.
My delegation is expected to continue with our engagements tomorrow with confirmed meetings with the ministries of the Interior, Education and investigators on the case.
Ghana’s Foreign Ministry shall remain focused and resolute in safeguarding the welfare and dignity of all Ghanaians,” the post concluded.
His comments follow a viral video, in which a relative claimed that Nana Agyei’s mother was called to Kotoka International Airport to join the delegation travelling to Latvia to seek justice for him.
Upon arriving at the airport, she was informed that her plane ticket was fake, even though she had previously been charged GHS 2,000 for her visa processing fees.
Nana Agyei’s visibly distraught relative also noted that while at the airport, they saw the delegation, which included government appointees, preparing to depart for Latvia.
She questioned why a grieving mother should have to endure such an ordeal and is calling on the public to help spread this information so it reaches the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
According to her, family members who were initially included in the delegation list by the Minister of Foreign Affairs were later removed.
She further quizzed why the mother’s passport was allegedly being withheld while government officials had already travelled.
However, in a statement issued on February 2, 2026, the Ministry said the allegation made in the circulating video are“false, misleading, and unfounded.”
Background
The 18-year-old Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student studying in Latvia, died under what the family believes were mysterious circumstances.
Nana Agyei Ahyia was a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University and passed away on June 4, 2025.
According to the family, he had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga.
On June 1, 2025, just three days before his death, he reportedly sent a disturbing voice note claiming he had been poisoned. Three days later, on June 4, 2025, his relatives were informed that he had allegedly fallen from the sixth floor of his apartment and died.
