Dr Arthur Kennedy, a veteran politician and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta is now an albatross around the neck of the party.

The veteran politician made these remarks while calling on the NPP to sideline former President Akufo-Addo.

According to Dr Arthur Kennedy, the earlier Akufo-Addo takes a back seat, the better for the NPP.

Dr Arthur Kennedy cited that Akufo-Addo refused to sack his cousin Ken Ofori-Atta when mounting pressures were calling for his removal.

He further highlighted that Nana Addo caused the division in the New Patriotic Party when he forced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on the party as the 2024 presidential flagbearer.

Dr Arthur Kennedy stressed that Nana Addo is the leader who has divided the party more than any leader in recent years.

Speaking on TV3’s Agenda programme, Arthur Kennedy stated, “His conduct is inconsistent with the points he made, he was the person who divided the party and tied it hand behind it back and force Dr Bawumia on the party at that time he could have preached unity but he did not he was the person who refused to sack Ken Ofori-Atta who is now an albatross around the neck of the party.

He was the one who told voters in the Ashanti Region that their thumb is their own and they could do whatever they want with it. Nana Addo is a liability to the party; the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP. As long as we don’t know that we will suffer.

Nana Addo is a liability, is a very big liabilty the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP and not only that his words are inconsistent with his actions. He has divided the party more than any other leader in our recent history, so he cannot preach unity and be taken seriously.

His comments follow Akufo-Addo’s warning to all the aspirants that the NPP is bigger than any individual during the party’s peace pact.

“The ideology of the NPP remains attractive to Ghanaians. The NPP is bigger than any individual…unity is not an option, a strategic necessity to victory,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, has said his cousin Ken Ofori-Atta wants to come to Ghana.

According to Gabby Otchere-Darko, speaking for the first time publicly regarding Ken Ofori-Atta’s ICE detention, he revealed his cousin is doing well.

Gabby Otchere-Darko stressed that he believes Ken would come to Ghana, and know he wants to come to Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV hosted by Serwaa Amihere, Gabby was asked what Ken Ofori-Atta thought of claims that he was responsible for the “unpopular decisions” on Ghana’s economy during the administration of former President Akufo-Addo.

Gabby stated, “I haven’t seen him for a while, so I don’t know.”

When questioned how he felt about the unpopular decision, he added, “I will keep my feelings to myself, I don’t have an opinion I want to share”.

Speaking about Ofori-Atta’s detention, Gabby said that his cousin is a strong man.

He added that his faith would see him through the challenges he is going through.

Serwaa Amihere then questioned Gabby on pictures of Ofori-Atta’s virtual appearance before a US immigration court from his detention centre. While spotting a black jumpsuit, he stated, “He is a very strong man mentally, so I’m sure he is doing well”.

Serwaa Amihere then asked Gabby about the conversation he had with Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, where Gabby is reported to have said that Ken is afraid of returning to Ghana because of how he would be treated.

Gabby responded, saying, “I don’t discuss private conversations publicly, so I don’t wish to discuss it”.

Gabby went on to give the assurance that Ken Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana.

“Why will he not return to Ghana? I believe Ken would come to Ghana, and I know he wants to come to Ghana,” he said.
