Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the former president of Ghana, has backed the newly elected New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Akufo-Addo described Bawumia as someone who is a loyal party man with a deep love for Ghana and the appetite to lead the party back to power.

The former president made these remarks following Dr Bawumia, accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, who paid a courtesy call on him.

Akufo-Addo reflected on their long political partnership. Nana Akufo-Addo recalling choosing Dr Bawumia as his running mate 18 years ago.

In a post on social media on Wednesday, former President Akufo-Addo wrote, “Newly-minted flagbearer of our great party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his spouse, @SBawumiaonX, paid a courtesy call on me yesterday, 3rd February, 2026.

Eighteen years ago, I chose Dr. @MBawumia as my running mate. We stood side by side through four elections. I know his mind, his character, his love for Ghana, and his appetite for hard work. He is loyal to the party and country. With the full support of our rank and file and the continued generosity of our supporters, I know that he will lead us back to victory”.

In related news, Dr Arthur Kennedy, a veteran politician and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has begged Ghanaians to give the former vice president and NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a chance to become president of Ghana.

According to Arthur Kennedy, a vice President and a Presidential candidate are normally different people.

He cited instances where Vice Presidents who got opportunities to be Presidents turned out to be effective, naming Anwar Sadat and Richard Nixon.

Speaking on Joy News on February 2, 2026, Dr Arthur Kennedy explained, “We should all give Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a chance because a vice President and a Presidential candidate are normally different people”.

“Anwar Sadat was said to be cowardly as Nasser’s vice, but he turned out to be a very effective President in his own right”, he said.

“Richard Nixon was not a very impressive Vice President to Dwight Eisenhower, but he did an excellent job as President, until Watergate”.

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia has said he would be open-hearted and open-armed to everybody, even those who insulted him during the NPP primaries.

Dr Bawumia pledged a reconciliatory and inclusive approach following his victory.

According to Dr Bawumia, the NPP winning the 2028 general elections lies in resolving internal party challenges.

Speaking to supporters and party executives at his residence in Tse Addo, Accra, on Monday, January 2, Dr. Bawumia stated, “The NDC vote they didn’t get much more than they did in 2020, it is basically the same, the NPP votes basically collapsed 2.1 million less because our own people decided not to come out to vote so it an internal problem”.

So, fundamentally, if we solve that internal problem, you are on your way to victory, because if 2.1 million people had voted, we would have won. That’s it, I am going to be very open-minded, open-hearted and open-armed, I will bring everybody, even those who were insulting me, I am going to bring them all together”.
