13 Nigerian sex workers busted

Thirteen(13) Nigerian nationals have been arrested by the New Juabeng South District Police Command over their alleged involvement in sex work.

The thirteen Nigerian sex wrokers are age from fifteen(15) to thirty-one(31).

They have been arrested by the New Juabeng South District Police Command for their involvement in prostitution within Koforidua and the surrounding areas.

Reports suggest the operation was carried out following intense police investigations.

The intense police investigations resulted in the arrest of other individuals, including landlords, over their complicity in the operations of the suspected sex workers.

Superintendent Ransford Nsiah stated, “Last Sunday, we received a complaint from another Nigerian lady that she had been assaulted by her mistress, whom we normally call a ‘queen mother.’ The assault happened because she could not meet the daily target of GH¢400 set by the queen mother.

“We also arrested another man who had constructed a house and turned it into a brothel where the women are staying.

“He collects GH¢25 per day from them. So far, about 15 persons, the youngest aged between 15 years and 32 years, are in police custody and will be put before the court immediately,” he said

In related news, thirteen sex workers arrested by the National Security operatives in the Northern Region have been made to sweep parts of the Tamale Central Market.

Reports suggest the women were arrested during a night swoop at the Jubilee Park and the Bank of Ghana stretch, an emerging hotspot for commercial sex work.

RSM Adam Mohammed, the Northern Regional Security Liaison Officer, revealed the decision for the sex worker to sweep was a cautionary measure and to support sanitation efforts.

He revealed that prostitution has been on the rise in Tamale, attracting both Ghanaian and foreign nationals.

RSM Adam Mohammed stated, “We carried out a swoop on night workers, and they were highly profiled and handed over to the authorities. Our city or municipality has been engulfed by so much dirt and trash.

“So, we thought it would be wise to direct them so that they could aid in the clean-up exercise of our cities. For that matter, we gave them brooms and other logistics to help us in the clean-up exercise,” he said.

“On record, I think there were about 13 of them. Aside from that, we’ve carried out operations on drug peddlers,” he said.

He further added that the suspects were later handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Additionally, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has boldly declared that sex workers and migrant beggars won’t be tolerated in Kumasi.

According to the KMA boss, the Assembly is preparing to launch a major crackdown on sex workers operating in the city and also remove migrant beggars.

Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi expressed deep concern about the increasing visibility of sex workers and beggars, arguing that they are a threat to the image, security and social order of Kumasi.

Speaking on Nhyira FM, Mr Boadi stated, “The increasing presence of prostitution in Asafo, Ashtown, Ahodwo, Adum and other areas of the city is worrying”.

“Intelligence suggests that a significant number of those involved are non-Ghanaian, with some individuals allegedly trafficking them into the country for sex work,” he stated.

He added, “Such business is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated in Kumasi, the Garden City. We will take action to address the situation very soon”.

The KMA boss further disclosed that they are collaborating closely with the Ghana Immigration Service to identify and remove non-Ghanaian beggars from the streets.

“We’re working hand-in-hand with Ghana Immigration to remove migrant beggars from the streets of Kumasi,” he added.
