Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has appealed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to consider reselecting Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as the party’s running mate for the 2028 general elections.
According to Dr Amoakohene, it is strategically important for the party to choose a running mate from the Ashanti Region.
He argued that Dr Opoku Prempeh remains a strong choice and deserves a second opportunity, just as the party’s flagbearer has been given another chance to lead the ticket.
He added that if Dr Bawumia has been given another chance to correct his mistake, Napo must also been given another chance.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Dr Frank Amoakohene stated, “I will not underestimate any party, elections are about Ghanaians deciding who to lead them, so yes, they have done their internal election and selected a candidate, UP and CPP will also do so at the end of the day, everyone will be access and we the NDC will apply our strategy to win the election.
But we feel and believe that irrespective of any candidate, this party bring NDC with God’s grace, will win the election”.
He added, “On the NPP side, I am happy that they have appointed Bawumia; what is remaining is for them to add NAPO for us to know that it is the same match as the 2024 elections”.
“We beg them to give us Napo and Bawumia, it will make them understand the election because they all went for the election and failed, and Bawumia has been given a second chance, so Napo must also be given a second chance since Bawumia is correcting his mistake, Napo will also correct his”.
However, Maurice Ampaw, a Legal practitioner, has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) do not need a Vice President from the Ashanti Region.
According to Maurice Ampaw, the Ashanti Region already loves Dr Bawumia, adding that Bryan Acheampong and he should be picked as running mates for the NPP.
He detailed that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), who was Dr Bawumia’s running mate, should sit somewhere for Bryan Acheampong, whom he labelled as the darling boy whose future is bright.
Speaking on Wontumi TV, Maurice Ampaw stated, “Bryan Acheampong, the darling boy, if it was up to me alone, he would be the vice president straight away. He is a vice president material.
The Ashanti Region, we love Bawumia, we don’t need a Vice President from the Ashanti Region. Napo should find somewhere and sit. Bryan has shown that he has constituencies before God and man, if Bawumia is put asided Bryan could have defeated Ken Agyapong because the vote that went for Bawumia will go to Bryan.
Bryan has taken over; he has youth on his side, knows how to speak and has the knowledge. Security-wise, the NDC is afraid of him. A vice president who has money and has wisdom, on top of security issues and someone the NDC is afraid of”, he added.
Meanwhile, reports claim Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, is reportedly positioning himself for the vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2028 general election, should Dr Bawumia secure the party’s flagbearership.
Ghana Chronicles in a post on X stated, “Sources close to the Bawumia campaign say Mr Annoh-Dompreh has been openly critical of Dr Bawumia’s 2024 running mate, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, arguing that the former Energy Minister added little electoral value to the ticket in the December 2024 elections and should not be retained should Dr Bawumia secure the party’s nomination again.
The Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP is said to be touting his own credentials in support of his ambitions, citing his parliamentary seniority as a fourth-term legislator, his current role as Minority Chief Whip, and what he describes as his broad national appeal.
He has also reportedly cited his maternal Ashanti heritage, fluency in Ewe, marriage to a northern woman, Barbara, and his representation of a constituency in the Eastern Region as factors that enhance his appeal as a unifying figure within the opposition party”.
