The Eastern Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has banned three senior high schools from participating in all sporting and related extracurricular activities for two years.
The GES decision follows incidents of hooliganism during the recent Regional Super Zonal Sports Competition.
The affected schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH), New Juaben Senior High School (NJUASCO), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (NSUTECH).
Effective February 11, 2026, the three schools are barred from organising, spectating or participating in all sporting activities, including quizzes, debates, cadetting and entertainment programmes at the school, zonal and regional levels.
In addition to the ban, the three schools have been fined GHC 500.00 and will be surcharged for any costs arising from damage to property or injuries sustained by individuals.
Eastern Regional Director of Education, Ivy Asantewa Owusu, announced the sanctions in a press release following alleged incidents of gang rape and stabbing during the just-ended inter-school sports competition in Koforidua.
The press release added that the directive is in line with Section 2.17 of the GES Code of Conduct on physical and psychological violence and also the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association Code of Discipline.
In related news, a female student of Osino Presbyterian Senior High School has allegedly been gang raped during an interschools sports competition held in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
The victim was reportedly found in a visibly weak condition and rushed to the police before being referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for medical attention.
Two underage students have since been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a student in a bush during the inter-school sports event and are currently facing prosecution.
A third suspect, believed to be an old student, is on the run.
The two suspects have been charged by the Police with conspiracy to commit a crime and with rape.
