The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended all zonal inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region.
In a statement on Sunday, February 22, 2026, the regional directorate detailed that the move follows management receiving credible reports of violence and clashes among student adding that in the interest of safeguarding lives, maintaining order, and preserving the integrity of school sports, Management immediately ceased all zonal inter-school sporting activities.
They further disclosed that the measure would enable Management to undertake a thorough review of the situation to develop appropriate strategies and preventive mechanisms for any recurrence of violence.
Also, Heads of SHSs and SHTSs have been requested to immediately suspend all planned or scheduled zonal inter-school athletics competitions.
Part of the Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) read, “These unfortunate occurrences have not only disrupted the spirit of healthy competition but have also posed serious threats to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators”.
“It is therefore regrettable that these noble objectives have been undermined by acts of indiscipline and violence,” it added.
“Please note that this directive takes immediate effect and must be adhered to without exception,” the letter emphasised.
The development follows, amid a video that has emerged of a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School being violently assaulted by students of the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
Reports suggest the incident occurred at a District Schools Athletics Games organised to promote youth talent and sportsmanship.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Agona Swedru on Thursday, February 19.
In a viral video shared on social media, students from the two schools clashed during the confrontation, with a student of Obrachire being attacked by a group of SWESBUS students.
The Obrachire SHS Student was allegedly pelted with stones and beaten with sticks.
Reports suggest the student has been hospitalised after the assault with a teacher at Obrachire, revealing that the incident has been reported to the police.
This latest incident adds to a disturbing trend of violence during inter-school sporting activities.
Recently, a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed during the Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival.
The Eastern Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) responded by banning three senior high schools from participating in all sporting and related extracurricular activities for two years.
The GES decision follows incidents of hooliganism during the recent Regional Super Zonal Sports Competition.
The affected schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH), New Juaben Senior High School (NJUASCO), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (NSUTECH).
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has announced that they have commence investigation into the viral video of student violence.
According to the Police, they have seen the viral video, and they strongly condemn the violence.
They further assured Ghanaians that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to book.
In a post shared on the Ghana Police Service social media account on X, read, “POLICE COMMENCE INVESTIGATION INTO VIRAL VIDEO OF STUDENT VIOLENCE.
The Ghana Police Service has sighted a viral video in which a group of people are seen pelting stones at a student.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course.
The Service strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice”.
