Sam George, the Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Technologies, has been told MTN offers 800GB yearly for 980ghc in Nigeria.

According to Sam George, the Nigerian High Commission to Ghana revealed this to him, saying Ghana’s cheap internet bundle and stable electricity are the things attracting Nigerian Criminals to Ghana.

He further disclosed that Ghana has the cheapest internet in the sub-region when you use the 399 bundle.

Speaking to the media following President John Dramani Mahama’s delivery of the State of the Nation Address (SONA), Sam George stated, “On that bundle, the Nigerian High Commission to Ghana said to me it is the reason why we are seeing a lot of Nigerian criminals coming into Ghana.

Because our internet is the cheapest in the sub-region when you use the 399 bundle, and we have stable electricity”.

However, a netizen identified as Tech in Twi has reminded Sam George that MTN offers 800GB yearly for 980ghc in Nigeria, while Ghana offers GH₵399 for 214GB.

In a post on X, the netizen wrote, “Sam George said the GH₵399 is the reason Nigerians come here for browsing, since Ghana has the cheapest MTN package. Just to remind you that MTN offers 800GB yearly for 980ghc in Nigeria, while Ghana offers GH₵399 for 214GB that most consumers finish in less than 1 to 2 months. Do the math”.

Some X user reacting to the development stated, “My 214GB (GHC 399) bundle vanished in less than 30 days. I checked my itemised bill via *1333# and realised their system literally STOPPED tracking my bundle on Jan 31st and started charging me ‘Pay As You Go’ secretly. I emailed them days ago, but I am yet to get a sane response”.

A netizen added, “Depending on the user. I bought it since November, and still I am using it to date. I have 90GB remaining”.

“He is not serious. Does it even make sense that Nigerians would their and come to Ghana just because of Internet browsing? They come here because of the fraud”, a netizen added.

A netizen added, “Let me even shock you further, Nigerians are already using 5G network while Ghana is still stuck with Mtn 4G, while Telecel’s 4G is nothing to write home about, and Airtel/Tigo is trash”.

“Working here in Ghana and using Nigerian MTN Glo DSTV services is cheaper, that’s why people buy/use Nigerian DSTV services here in Ghana.

So earning money in Ghana and buying data with a Nigerian chip/sim and its bundle packages is way better”, one more Ghanaian added.

“It’s not Sam George who said it. It’s the Nigerian High Commissioner. I really rate you highly, man. I thought you, of all people, would have listened to what Sam George said”, another X user added.

Meanwhile, Sam George’s remarks follow the mutiple arrest of Nigerian nationals in a cybercrime operation.

In related stories,  Sam George, some weeks ago, announced that the Security agencies had arrested 53 Nigerian nationals and rescued 44 young men believed to be victims of a cybercrime operation.

According to Sam George, the cybercrime operations follow coordinated intelligence-led operations targeting suspected centres in Accra.

The victims were allegedly exploited and coerced by kingpins into engaging in various cyber-related criminal activities.

The operation was carried out at multiple locations, including East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba, where the victims were found in their apartments operating laptop computers.

The joint team made up of operatives from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters and the National Police SWAT carried out simultaneous raids.

During the operation, nine Nigerian nationals were arrested as suspects believed to be key actors in the cybercrime activities, along with 44 other Nigerian nationals who were rescued and considered to be victims.

A search of the premises led to the recovery of 52 assorted mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

According to reports, 53 Nigerian nationals were arrested across the five locations, with 17 picked up at Tuba, 11 at Afienya, 10 each at Kwabenya and Weija, and five at East Legon Hills.

The suspect has since been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations after they have been profiled.
