Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, has said the NDC majority caucus in parliament will demand the most severe punishment for the Minority leader Afenyo-Markin if he fails to provide evidence of his allegation of a scandal in the security service involving a top government appointee.

On the floor of parliament, Mahama Ayariga threw a challenge to the Minority Leader to provide evidence of his allegation.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, Mahama Ayariga stated, “I thought that there would be a denial that a statement like that was not made, but there’s no such denial, except an allusion that he even knows more. Mr Speaker, we are happy to hear them all, and want to hear them in public.

“… you must substantiate it in this chamber, in the full glare of all the media houses. Otherwise, we in the NDC will insist on the most severe punishment for you,” he said.

He added, “Mr Speaker, the attempt, the attempt to scandalise this government, will not happen because some people, every week, register a scandal. They must pay scandals for the NDC government, even where there is no scandal; they want to manufacture a scandal.

“If indeed a minister or a senior NDC person has any interest, any interest in the company that is providing the service, we want to hear it. Want to know that minister, so that we will take action against that minister, because this president has promised that any minister who is involved in a scandal, he will remove that minister,” he said.

His remarks follow, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who has been dragged to the Privileges Committee of Parliament.

Afenyo-Markin has been referred to the Privileges Committee of Parliament following his allegations of corruption in recruitment into the security services, implicating a senior government official.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, during parliament sitting, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister of the Interior, demanded Speaker of Parliament refer Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee to substantiate his allegations.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stated, “Mr Speaker, if you recollect, you were in the chair on Thursday when he started this allegation. I took the opportunity on the floor to correct him and show him, and even encourage him, that if he wanted information, he could write and I would furnish him with all the details.

“He decided to take advantage of the State of the Nation Address on Friday, when the whole world was listening to us, to say categorically that the current internal security recruitment is scandalous. There’s corruption looming. People will go to prison. He said it on this floor,” he stated.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak added, “And I’m saying that, Mr Speaker, based on our Standing Order 31 (E and F), that is contentious. And I’m saying that let’s give him the opportunity to go to Privileges, where you have all the ample time and opportunity to provide all his allegations so that we meet him there with our facts.

“So, Mr Speaker, that is why I am referring to the fact that we are having too many of such comments coming from somebody like the Minority Leader, and the time for him to prove his allegation is here, and the best place to do that, Mr Speaker, is at Privileges,” he said.

Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has said he is ready to appear before the Privileges Committee to present evidence of his allegations.

The minority leader demanded that the hearing on the matter be made public.

He stated, “Honourable Minister of the Interior, let the referral be made, and let there be a public hearing. I will avail myself should you exercise that discretion, and the matter can then be brought to a peaceful resolution”.

“The fact that this matter has been referred to the Privileges Committee does not mean that the person is guilty. All suspects are presumed innocent. It is the responsibility of the committee to make a recommendation to the House,” he added.
