Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has appealed to the Majority Caucus to desist from displaying placards bearing the image of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on the floor of Parliament.
According to Afenyo-Markin, Ken Ofori-Atta has not been found guilty by any court, calling on the Majority caucus to stop displaying his images in parliament.
The minority leader highlighted concerns following strong reservations expressed by the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the family of Ofori-Atta over the conduct of some majority Members of Parliament who were seen holding up placards with his pictures during the State of the Nation Address.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted that political disagreements should not result in actions that damage the reputation of individuals who have not been found guilty, adding that such conduct will create an unhealthy precedent.
The minority leader further appealed to the Majority Chief Whip and leadership to ensure that similar incidents do not occur again.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Afenyo-Markin stated, “No court has found him guilty. We can do our politics, but to also print his pictures deliberately, and that day the whole world’s attention was on this chamber.
I would plead through my friend, the Chief Whip, to ensure that in future any such action is curtailed, controlled or stopped by him so that this house would get the needed peace because, Mr Speaker, if we don’t stop it, a certain precedent will be set.”
In related news, the United States immigration court has denied former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta bail.
Reports suggest that Ken Ofori-Atta’s bail, which was heard on February 19, 2026, was unsuccessful.
According to veteran journalist Alfred Ogbamey, lawyers for Ken Ofori-Atta had prayed the court to grant bail to allow him to seek medical attention.
Nevertheless, the presiding judge, David Gardey, denied the request.
Judge Gardey reportedly ruled that bail was unnecessary, arguing that Ofori-Atta has access to adequate medical care at the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility where he is being held.
Parts of the post shared by the veteran journalist stated, “At his hearing last Thursday, lawyers for Ken Ofori-Atta argued that he should be granted bail to access proper medical care. Sources say the Judge refused the request, insisting that the former minister has access to adequate medical needs at the ICE facility”.
Also, TV3 in a post stated, “Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta remains in detention in the United States after a bail application in his immigration case was unsuccessful, according to sources familiar with the proceedings”.
It will be recalled that Ken Ofori-Atta’s bond hearing what is known as a bail hearing in Ghana, took place on February 19, 2026.
The federal judge was said to know whether Ghanaian authorities have filed proper proof of an extradition request.
Earlier, Ken Ofori-Atta appeared before a United States immigration court in Virginia on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. He was spotted wearing a dark shirt and a face mask during the hearing
His case was heard at the Annandale Immigration Court before Immigration Judge David Gardey.
The former finance minister was represented by his legal team, including Christopher Chaisson of Whiteford Taylor & Preston and Kwao Amagashi.
Ken Ofori-Atta is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Centre.
The court adjourned the case to April 27, 2026, with a direction for the U.S. government to provide evidence of any extradition application by February 19, 2026.
