A viral video has surfaced of President John Dramani Mahama responding to a citizen urging him to contest again for the presidency after completing his tenure.
According to the Ghanaian citizen, Mahama must contest against him; otherwise, he will take him to court.
Speaking in the midst of a large crowd which had gathered at the location, an elderly man who spotted President Mahama in a moving car was heard loudly shouting, “Mr President, go again! Go and contest again, because if you don’t, I will take you to court!”
In response, President Mahama, seated in his car, smiled broadly, stated, “I have heard you,” while he waved at the public.
Some Ghanaians reacting to the video stated, “Looks like the country is so quiet the elephants are not bringing anything anaa they are not getting anything to talk about”.
Another X user added, “People just appreciate what he is doing.
Yaanom think they’re making some inroads with the cocoa politics. We shall see!”.
“Some people won’t be happy seeing this”, a netizen added.
In addition, President John Dramani Mahama has made a bold declaration that he will not be a candidate in Ghana’s next elections.
According to John Mahama, stepping aside in 2028 would give him the moral authority to hold the line when it comes to Ghana’s fiscal discipline in an election year.
Mahama, during a bilateral discussion with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, criticised the practice of incumbent governments by-passing fiscal safeguards to curry favour with voters, a cycle he will end.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he said.
Meanwhile, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, the member of Parliament for Akim Oda, has said persons pushing President John Dramani Mahama for a third-term bid are greedy politicians.
According to Alexander Akwasi Acquah, President Mahama must ignore the third-term calls and step away when his term ends.
The Akim Oda MP claimed there is an attempt to use the NDC super-majority in Parliament to push the third-term agenda.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio, the MP stated, “The Ghanaians I know believe that anyone advising President Mahama to pursue a third term is a greedy politician”.
“We saw how terrible his first term was. Ghanaians have reconsidered and brought you back to complete your two terms. However, you are already pushing for a third term before your second is even over.”
Also, Professor H Kwasi Prempeh, the Chair of the Constitution Review Committee, has said the committee could not find a place for a third term for a president.
According to the Chair of the Committee, nobody really seemed to like the idea of a third term.
Presenting the committee reports to President John Mahama on Monday, December 22, Professor H Kwasi Prempeh stated, “We couldn’t find a place for a third term; nobody really seemed to like it, there was really no demand for it”.
He further noted that even the President, John Dramani Mahama, himself was not in favour of it.
According to the chair, the committee mainly focus on improving governance efficiency.
