Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the Police in Vienna, Austria, have opened an investigation following a robbery on the Black Stars.
According to Kofi Adams, preliminary reports indicate that the CCTV cameras at the hotel were not operational during the incident.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation is quoted to have said, “They are working to carry out the investigation. The initial report we have is that the CCTV was not functioning, and the police are checking when it stopped working and who was responsible for the hotel’s surveillance system at that time”.
Reports had earlier suggested that the Black Stars of Ghana had been robbed ahead of their international friendly on March 27, 2026, against Austria.
According to reports, the Black Stars have suffered a robbery attack in Vienna as they prepare to face Austria.
Reports from Sporty FM detailed that players and technical team members were victims of the incident and losing several valuable items valued at $20,000.
The reports suggest no players or technical team members being physically harmed during the incident
In a post on X Sporty FM, wrote, “BREAKING: A top official of the Black Stars has confirmed to SportyFM that the team camp has been ROBBED. ⛔️
Valuables stolen include $2,250 cash and
2 Rolex watches”.
Sporty FM in a new card wrote, “Black Stars camp in Vienna allegedly hit by robbery ahead of Austria friendly; players and technical team members lose valuables including cash and watches valued at $20,000.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars will face Austria at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Friday, March 27, with the kickoff scheduled for 5: 00 pm.
In related news, Ghanaian Dancehall artistes, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, have both contributed towards the Black Stars‘ 2026 World Cup campaign.
Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, the two musicians, were present at the launch of the campaign at the Kempinski Hotel on Friday night.
Shatta Wale’s $100,000 pledge, with Stonebwoy also pledging $101,000, which included $81,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of music services.
Individuals and corporate bodies also pledged significant amounts to support Ghana’s preparation for the global tournament.
Ibrahim Mahama’s mining firm, Engineers & Planners, which committed $5 million, was the headline sponsorship.
Also, Goldfields pledged $2 million, with an additional $1 million for next year.
Additionally, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will not fly Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to President Mahama, the government’s decision is in line with recommendations in the Dzamefe Report, which warned against the use of public funds for such purposes.
President Mahama highlighted that even supporting a small number of 200 fans would place a significant financial burden on the state.
He detailed that flying and accommodating just 200 supporters could cost close to $2 million.
Speaking at the Ghana World Cup fundraising campaign on Friday, March 20, 2026, Mahama stated, “In consonance with the Dzamefe Report, the government has no plans to allocate public funds to fly supporters to the World Cup”.
“We all want to see our fans in the stands, but we must be responsible in how we use public resources,” he added.
Mahama stressed the need to channel funds into critical areas such as job creation.
