Black Stars vs Real Madrid

Rare footage of the 1962 historic game between the Black Stars and Real Madrid has been shared on social media.

Reports suggest that Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, sought to show the world the country’s football prowess as an emerging powerhouse in Africa during the 1960s.

A TikToker who posted the rare footage of the game between the Black Stars and Real Madrid wrote, “Rare footage captures the historic 1962 international friendly match between Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, and the world-renowned Real Madrid of Spain. The exciting encounter took place at the Accra Sports Stadium”.

“Real Madrid started the game strong, immediately putting the Black Stars on the defensive in the opening five minutes. Despite the early pressure, Agrifin, who captained the home team, delivered a brilliant performance, showcasing excellent combinations with his forwards”.

“The Black Stars took the lead in the seventeenth minute when centre forward Edward Aquah, after receiving a pass from inside left Agrifin, scored the first goal of the match. Real Madrid then shifted the momentum, forcing the Black Stars into a defensive stance for a period. Puskas, a key player for the visiting team, managed to equalise with a header in the thirtieth minute.

Shortly after the equaliser, left winger Baba Yara initiated a skilful move that dismantled Real Madrid’s entire defence. Though his shot was initially punched out by goalkeeper Aragones, an unmarked Adu was on hand to tap in the rebound, putting the Black Stars ahead once more. This captivating match offers a glimpse into a significant moment in football history”.

In related news, Veteran Ghanaian commentator Joe Lartey has revealed reasons behind the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s decision to invite European football giants Real Madrid to play against the Black Stars.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, Lartey explained Nkrumah’s perspective, saying, “Kwame Nkrumah discovered the importance of unity, especially in politics. He attended school at Achimota and did a bit of sports, and he realised that football, in particular, had a strong unifying force.”

“After appointing Ohene Gyan as Director of Sports for Ghana, he sometimes planned with him some of the sports activities organised. Nkrumah worked solo in inviting Real Madrid to play with the Black Stars team. The idea was to show how far we’ve developed in football.”

“We were then just beginning to show our strength in football. There was a big debate about whether it was proper for the Black Stars to play against a world-famous club side like Real Madrid because they were champions in Europe and dreaded by opponents,” Lartey stated.

In recent times, Ralf Rangnick, the head coach of Austria, has told Ghanaians not to be too emotional following the Black Stars’ humiliating 5-1 defeat to his side.

According to Ralf Rangnick, Ghanaians should not be too emotional about Otto Addo, as he does not think that with a different coach, the result would have been any different.

Speaking at a post-match interview following his Austrian side’s thrashing of the Black Stars, Ralf Rangnick stated, “Ghana qualified for the World Cup with Otto Addo as manager. So the most important thing is that they qualified.

At least we don’t overrate this game and this result. I remember that we played Turkey two years ago before the Euros. We beat them 6-1 here, but then we played against Turkey again in the round of 16 at the Euros, and we lost 2-1, unfortunately. But luckily for Turkey”.

“So, I wouldn’t rate that too much. Let’s wait and see how they play against Germany on Tuesday, and then it might be a completely different story again. Don’t be so emotional about your coach. Otto is a good one, and I don’t think that with another manager it would have been a different result,” Rangnick added.
