A viral video has been shared on social media showing illegal miners, commonly known as galamseyers, operating right behind a basic school in Wassa Akropong.

The viral video shared was from footage from a documentary by international media outlet DW, which shows miners searching for gold close to a basic school in Wassa Akropong in the Upper Denkyira West constituency.

In the video, the uncompleted school building is located within a community surrounded by mining activities with heavy-duty equipment, including excavators and changfans, and pumping machines seen busily operating just behind the school.

A narrator in the DW report stated, “So far, regulations have failed; the need to find gold trumps all other social needs. Not even the health or the safety of the country’s future generation. This is one of the many basic schools in Wasa Akropong. As you can see, right behind the school are excavators and miners searching for gold. This is illegal.

School authorities tell me they are helpless against the influence of the miners. The use of heavy-duty machinery creates plumes of dust. The water is unsafe, and the mounds of sand could easily collapse on the school,” the report stated.

“Sadly, the school has had to relocate once because mining was getting too close to their buildings. But that is happening all over again,” it added.

One netizen who shared the video stated, “Brooo, this is completely out of hand.

Galamsey is happening in broad daylight, right behind a basic school in Wasa Akropong!

Our children, brothers and sisters are sitting in class while illegal miners are working just meters away.

This is extremely dangerous and totally unacceptable.

Mr President, we beg you… Please act NOW before it’s too late!”.

Another Ghanaian reacting to the video stated, “One landslide away from disaster. The president will apologise and sympathise, same as other politicians. They will make 10-15 arrests and pretend to be doing something about it. 2 months later, we return to default, and the act begins. Cycle continues until we self-annihilate”.

One more X user wrote, “THIS IS THE SICKENING (UNSPOKEN) STORY BEHIND GHANA’S “SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE” IN RESTORING “MACROECONOMIC STABILITY” AND AN APPRECIATING EXCHANGE RATE.  WHY ARE WE DOING THIS TO OURSELVES!!!!! #stopgalameynow”

Meanwhile, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced he will be exposing top government officials involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the next few days.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, April 29, Miracles Aboagye stated, “I will, in the next few days, mention senior members, very top, top officials, who are close to this government and are actively operating in the galamsey space in this country.

Our river bodies are dying; some are no longer flowing, and others have virtually come to a standstill, simply because of this government’s actions,” he said

In related news, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, has lamented how illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has forced the Church to stop traditional river baptism.

According to Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, galamsey activities have hampered traditional water baptism in some mining communities.

He highlighted that the Church of Pentecost have now shifted to synthetic rubber pools in several districts to carry out the ordinance.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, speaking during his State of the Church Address at the 48th General Conference on April 22, 2026, highlighted the persistent destruction of Ghana’s water.

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost stated, “The extensive pollution of water bodies due to illegal mining has hampered traditional water baptism in some mining communities, necessitating a shift to synthetic rubber pools in several districts to carry out the ordinance,” he stated.
