Afenyo Markin dazzle in traditional regalia at the Aboakyir festival

A viral video of the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has surfaced on social media, with him dazzling in traditional regalia at the Aboakyir festival.

In the viral video, Afenyo-Markin stole the spotlight during the annual celebration of the Aboakyir Festival in Winneba.

The minority leader was captured wearing a white scarf around his neck, while two women stood beside him, fanning him.

Afenyo-Markin was captured seated majestically on a traditional stool.

He later stood up and treated the crowd to some traditional dance moves as drummers performed at the Aboakyir festival.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the video stated, “Herh Ghana! This country, no debi any irresponsible being biaa is given a leadership position. How can a liar, a police officer, abused and corruption-esque as a chief? We are fools”.

A netizen added, “How can a Freemason man become a king if not for our corrupt system and tradition?”.

One X user added, “He couldn’t do all this to promote the festival when you were the minority leader and in position doing all this now in opposition really speaks a lot about him”.

“Afenyo is sowing discord in Winneba and its environs. People who know him are aware that he’s a wolf in a sheep’s clothing”, a netizen claimed.

In related news, the vice president, Prof Opoku-Agyemang, in a post shared on X, also announced she joined the people of Effutu to celebrate the 2026 Aboakyir Festival.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang in her post wrote, “This morning, I joined the people of Effutu to celebrate Aboakyer 2026. This year’s celebration also marks the 30th anniversary of Oma Odefe Neenyi Ghartey VII, whose leadership remains an example for many.

The Aboakyer festival is a platform for rediscovering, preserving, and promoting identity. Government is therefore prioritizing investments in access roads, infrastructure, and cultural enterprises to position Effutu as a growing tourism hub capable of attracting visitors, creating jobs, and boosting local economic activity.

To that end, Government is still very committed to key national initiatives, including the Women’s Development Bank, which will expand access to finance for market women, fish processors, and small-scale entrepreneurs, for example. The 24-hour economy policy is being advanced, and preparations are underway for nationwide 24-hour markets. Government is also intensifying its focus on youth development, with programmes such as Adwumawura designed to support young people to transform their ideas into viable businesses. Strategic infrastructure projects, including the Kasoa–Winneba road, remain a priority, given their importance to regional economic transformation.

I commend the people of Effutu for their peace and harmony, which continue to provide a strong foundation for development. As we celebrate, we are reminded that progress is sustained by unity and collaboration. May the Aboakyer festival continue to grow from strength to strength”.
