OPASS nurse dies in tragic accident

A thirty-six-year-old student nurse of the Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS) has died in a tragic accident.

The deceased has been identified as Edward Cann.

Reports suggest Edward Cann died in a tragic accident near the Lakeside Washing Bay at Opass Junction.

The information gathered suggests the unfortunate incident reportedly occurred whilst the young man was travelling from Kukurantumi towards Opass Junction on his Royal Motorbike with registration M-23-UE 424.

The New Tafo District Police Command has confirmed that the body has been deposited at the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

In their statement, they wrote, “1. The New Tafo-Akim District Police Command is investigating a tragic motor accident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026, resulting in the death of a healthcare professional

2. At about 1:30 am this dawn, police received reports of a solo motor accident near the Lakeside washing bay at OPASS Junction and proceeded to the scene to find a male rider with severe injuries lying near his Royal motorbike with registration M-23-UE 424.

3. The victim was rushed to the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital for emergency medical attention, but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

4. The victim has been identified as Edward Cann, 36, a School Nurse at Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS).

5. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mr Cann was travelling from Kukurantumi toward OPASS Junction. It is alleged that the rider failed to disengage the motorbike’s kickstand. While in motion, the stand struck the road surface, causing the rider to lose control and fall.

6. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, and the motorbike has been impounded at the New Tafo Police Station for further examination.

7. The Police extends its deepest condolences to the family of Edward Cann and the entire OPASS community”.

Ghanaians reacting to the tragic news wrote, “The number of tragic accidents from the beginning this year to now is so shocking, getting worse, what are they doing to save lives for us to grow, reach our old ages is sickening”.

An X user added, “A 36-year-old school nurse, gone just like that. Edward Cann was serving his community and lost his life on the road. Rest in peace. Ghana’s roads keep taking people from us too soon”.

A netizen added, “The rate at which accidents are happening this year is scary oo, Ei, is it the roads or they are just being careless”.

One last netizen added, “Oh, hmmm.. I have had this experience several times. Sometimes you just forget to move the stand in, and People have to alert you”.
