The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a three-working-day ultimatum demanding the immediate reinstatement of the suspended Chief Executive of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Aidoo.

The Association also backed KATH management’s decision to temporarily suspend emergency admissions and redirect patients to other facilities, citing severe overcrowding at the Accident and Emergency Centre and concerns over patient safety.

Parts of the GMA statement read, “The actions taken by the management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH were the right and proper professional and administrative decision in line with best practice in patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership across the world.

The actions taken did not turn away patients to their fate or flout the President’s directive but rather redirected patients and ensured they received safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH.

“The decision with the coordinated efforts of the Regional Health Directorate, Regional Coordinating Council, health facilities and hard-working health workers in the regior ed to a significant decongestion of the Accident & Emergency Centre and a resumption of new admissions to the KATH Emergency within 24 hours.

Council therefore is of the considered view that the initial query issued, and subsequent directive for suspension were without basis and ought not to have been occasioned”.

The GMA also called for the Health Minister to cease the hostile and confrontational actions that directly or indirectly incite the public against health workers.

“We therefore call for an immediate withdrawal of the directive to the Board of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to suspend the Chief Executive Officer and for his immediate reinstatement within the next 3 working days.

The National Executive Council fully supports and stands by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association’s decision to stand down Services until the suspension is withdrawn and necessary measures are put in place to improve emergency capacity in the Kumasi enclave.

We have also taken notice of ongoing engagements by the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Board with the leadership of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association towards resolving the impasse.

The Ghana Medical Association also expresses our utmost displeasure at the actions of the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, that have directly or indirectly sought to incite the public against health workers, with its associated increasing general demotivation of health professionals and incidents of violence against health workers.

We call on the Minister to cease these hostile and confrontational actions and engage constructively to ensure improved morale and the continued support of health workers towards achieving the objectives of the sector.

If such acts continue, the Association and its members will have no choice but to take remedial actions to ensure the sector does not degenerate into chaos.

We urge all members to remain calm as Council explores effective ways of achieving resolution of the issues. Council will be monitoring and will reconvene to decide on our next actions and communicate accordingly”, the GMA statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has joined the strike action by the Doctors at KATH.

The brohaha follows Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, who has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, for two weeks with immediate effect.

In a letter dated June 5, 2026, the Health Minister asserted that the decision follows the KATH CEO temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the facility.

The Health Minister highlighted that the action was taken in contravention of directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.

He disclosed that the meeting involving the Ministry’s Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor concluded that the CEO’s actions were inconsistent with the President’s directives.
