Authorities have confirmed that two people have died following the collapse of the three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie, in the Greater Accra Region.
According to emergency responders, two bodies were recovered from the rubble following hours of intensive search and rescue efforts at the scene.
Two others were rescued from the debris and transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
It is yet to be known the cause of the collapse as investigations are expected to commence.
Reports suggest the incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, in the Melcom Plus area, where a structure believed to be a residential building and mosque caved in.
Rescue teams indicated that the building was still under construction at the time of the collapse.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Facebook page, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey stated, “As it stands right now, two people have been rescued and taken to the hospital. One was in very critical condition, and we are hoping they will pull through”.
He further disclosed that firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the National Headquarters were swiftly deployed to the scene to commence rescue efforts.
The Rescue teams disclosed that at least one or two more people remain trapped under the debris.
According to the GNFS, their Director of Operations is personally leading the rescue mission, while heavy-duty equipment has been requested to assist emergency responders as they work to locate and rescue any remaining victims.
Meanwhile, Melcom Company Limited has refuted ownership or any association with the building that collapsed at Avenor in Accra on Sunday, June 7.
According to Melcom, all of its outlets across the country remain safe, secure, and fully operational.
On Sunday, June 7, Melcom, in a statement, clarified that the collapsed structure is not linked to its operations in any way.
They disclosed that thet the incident site is located only in the vicinity of Ashfoam and Melcom Plus.
Melcom further expressed sympathy to those affected by the incident and reassured customers and staff of the structural safety of all its facilities.
The statement read, “While we express our sympathies to all those who might have been affected by the said collapsed building, we want to assure our cherished customers, business partners, employees and the general public that none of our buildings or facilities at Avenor or any part of the country has collapsed”.
