According to Muntaka Mubarak, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has already identified several structures considered dangerous and unfit for habitation.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the disaster scene, Muntaka said, “Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down.

“We are currently doing the evacuations, and they must bring all those buildings down. I mean, some things are natural, and God will take care of the supernatural, but for the natural ones, we have to take care of them.”

The Interior Minister’s announcement follows the collapse of a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, which claimed two lives and left three others injured.

Authorities have confirmed that two people have died following the collapse of the three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie, in the Greater Accra Region.

According to emergency responders, two bodies were recovered from the rubble following hours of intensive search and rescue efforts at the scene.

Two others were rescued from the debris and transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

It is yet to be known the cause of the collapse as investigations are expected to commence.

Reports suggest the incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, in the Melcom Plus area, where a structure believed to be a residential building and mosque caved in.

Rescue teams indicated that the building was still under construction at the time of the collapse.

The  Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Facebook page, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey stated, “As it stands right now, two people have been rescued and taken to the hospital. One was in very critical condition, and we are hoping they will pull through”.

Meanwhile, Abdulai Mahama, a road and building consultant, has said many buildings in Accra are structurally unsafe and are only standing by the grace of God.

According to Engineer Mahama, Ghanaians keep ignoring all the laws and then expect God to hold the buildings.

Engineer Mahama warned that many developers continue to ignore building laws, with the situation posing a serious risk to lives.

He asserted that structural failures could occur at any time, calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations.

Engineer Mahama urged property owners to subject their structures to professional assessment to prevent future disasters.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on March 30, 2026, Engineer Mahama stated, “Indiscipline is just on the rise, especially when it comes to building. We ignore all the laws, and then we expect God to hold the buildings. Most buildings in Accra, I can say, are standing by the grace of God”.

“When God takes his eyes off for a microsecond, a lot of buildings will be off in Accra. We should engage engineers to go and assess our buildings. Every building standing can be assessed by any engineer who is worth his salt,” he added.
