Irate NDC members allegedly block Kofi Buah’s mining launch after contentious ‘Best Minister’ Award

A video has surfaced on social media alleging that the Abirem NDC constituency executives are angry at Lands and Natural Resources Minister Armah Kofi Buah.

Reports alleged that Kofi Buah was blocked from launching the government’s cooperative mining scheme after he allegedly bought the  “Best Minister” award at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards.

A Joy News footage shared on X showed a chaotic outdoor crowd of men pushing metal barriers and gathering near vehicles and buildings.

The development follows Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who won the Best Performing Minister at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Awards.

The event was held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, bringing together government officials, traditional leaders and stakeholders.

Other winners on the night were Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, who won the Best Regional Minister; and Dorcas Toffey, the Deputy Minister of Transport, who emerged as Best Deputy Minister at the awards ceremony.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, was adjudged Best Female Minister.

Some netizens reacting to the development stated, “If Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah is the NDC’s best-performing male minister, then chale, what are the rest doing? Sleeping on the job or actively making things worse?

Galamsey is still choking our rivers into Chocomilo; most of our water processing plants are still being shut down because of the turbidity of the water; Accra is flooding like Venice after two days of rain, and forests are disappearing… and this is the “best” they get an award for?

NDC really said “Best of a bad bunch” 😂 The bar isn’t just low; it’s buried six feet under. Congrats to the minister… and condolences to Ghana”.

“Has he finished fighting galamsey because that is the biggest challenge at his ministry?”, a netizen added.

One X user added, “Meanwhile, galamsey is destroying our water bodies and degrading lands”.

Meanwhile, Lands Minister Kofi Buah have so far failed to deliver on the John Mahama promise to fight galamsey.

Two years into office, galamsey is still a menace, devastating Ghana’s Land and River bodies. He has received heavy backlash due to the slow progress on illegal small-scale mining (galamsey), which continues to destroy water bodies and forests.

The Minister’s  Blue Water Guards initiative has been described as a useless and bogus venture by Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, commonly known as Vim Lady.

According to Afia Pokua, the launch of the Blue Water Guards is causing financial loss to the state, adding that the Lands and Natural Resources Minister must be held responsible.

Afia Pokua is quoted to have said, “Since Mahama came to power, the water has never been clear. Even under Akufo-Addo, we saw signs that the water was clear; it was only when he opened the floodgates for party boys to mine that he had problems.

This government introduced the Blue Water Guards, but they have been the most ineffective way to fight illegal mining. The minister has seen that the blue water guards are a useless and bogus venture that has caused the state financial loss,” she said.

It is worth to note the the launch of the Blue Water Guards has contributed little to the fight against illegal mining.

Another initiative established by Kofi Buah to fight galamsey, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), although it has been praised by the President, have been crying out for financial support in their fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

NAIMOS, some months ago, called for increased logistical and financial support to strengthen its anti-galamsey operations.
