Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the Interior Minister, has opened up on why Kristo Asafo’s private security license was suspended.

According to the Interior Minister, Kristo Asafo’s private security were found using an unapproved uniform and arms, contrary to the required police-approved standards for identification and tracking.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Accra-based Joy News on June 24, 2026, the Interior minister disclosed, “We realised that they were using an unapproved uniform. You know, every private security organisation, the police are supposed to give you the uniform you have to use. It helps us with tracking. They were using a different uniform other than what was approved”.

‎“This cache of arms, I’m sure you saw them, was all being used by those security guys against the condition under which the guns were licensed. Some were licensed, some were not. It’s against the condition under which those licenses were issued,” he explained.

‎“… we have to terminate the licenses. Today they were in court. They were put before court. I’ve just been informed that they’ve been granted bail under some condition. And we are going to pursue that because I’m the prosecutor,” Muntaka added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has suspended Kantanka Security Services Limited with immediate effect following Sunday’s shooting incident involving Adwoa Safo and brother Israel Kwadwo Safo (alias Akofena).

According to the Interior Ministry, the private security organisation was found to be in violation of sections of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), including the possession of firearms and unprescribed uniforms.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior read, “The Ministry of the Interior has, with immediate effect, suspended the Private Security Organisation (PSO) operating licence for Kantanka Security Services Limited following reports of alleged use of unprescribed uniform, possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company in the course of providing private security services on Sunday, 21″ June. 2026, at Kwabenya in Accra.

The decision was taken after preliminary investigations indicated possible violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571) which govern the operation of Private Security Organisations in Ghana.

The usage of unprescribed uniforms, unauthorised possession and use of firearms and ammunition as well as security accoutrements by private security personnel, constitutes a serious breach with significant implications for public safety and security.

Consequently, the Ministry has directed the company to immediately cease all operations forthwith pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.

All institutions are advised to refrain from conducting business with Kantanka Security Services Limited pending the conclusion of investigations and further directives from the Ministry,

The Ministry has further instructed the company to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service and to provide all necessary information to facilitate a thorough investigation,

The public is assured that the suspension is an administrative measure intended to safeguard public safety and security while investigations are ongoing. Appropriate action will be taken upon completion of the investigations and in accordance with the laws and regulations governing private security operations in Ghana.

The general public is further entreated to report any unlawful activities involving Private Security Organisations and their personnel to the nearest Police Station. Additionally, Private Security Organisations are reminded of the Public Notice on uniform compliance issued on 5th February 2026 by the Ghana Police Service and are strictly reminded to adhere to it.

The Ministry reiterates its commitment to ensuring strict compliance with all regulatory requirements by Private Security Organisations and will not hesitate to take the necessary action against any PSO found to be in breach of the law”.
