The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has launched a new vigilante group named “The Lions”.

Reports suggest the group was launched to support the party’s organisational activities and enhance security during political engagements.

The Lions, made up of members drawn from constituencies across the region, was unveiled under the motto, “Be Bold to Do the Right Thing.

In a viral, publicised video, over twenty individuals in black shirts are seen swearing an oath of allegiance to the New Patriotic Party, ahead of the 2028 General elections.

The leader of the group, Adure Anthony, speaking at the inauguration, stated that the initiative was driven by a desire to contribute to the growth and success of the NPP and not to serve personal interests.

He disclosed that the group was formed in response to security challenges often encountered during elections.

Adure Anthony claimed, “During the recent election, I witnessed that our security numbers are very few compared to the number of voters. Sometimes, you need this kind of private security or political parties also helping to deal with security situations during elections”.

“The only difference is the training that we will give them. This is just young people trying to help the party in our upcoming elections,” he stated.

He further disclosed that similar groups would be established in other regions to support party activities nationwide.

“Security is part of our everyday lives. Even with our phones, we have security. When you go to sleep, you lock your door; that is security. This is also about protecting the party from miscreants or those who want to misbehave,” he added.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the development stated, “My North people, make we stop make politicians use us. After elections, dem go forget we, while dem and dem families dey enjoy. Make we fight for jobs, better roads, schools and development, no be political violence”.

“I will be glad if they can rather form a vigilante group that will help tackle the Bawku crisis and other related violence in the Northern part of Ghana. Well, this is what the politician wants to see because your f***lishness is their powerhouse. @nick_nii_sai come see”, a netizen added.

One X user added, “ These are the people the NPP will use for dirty, risky donkey work while the real beneficiaries keep their families and children safely at home. They are treated as expendable foot soldiers, yet they still clap for those using them. When will they realise their worth?”.

A netizen noted, “A country where unemployed people think they can only be rich by joining a political party because they’ve seen others who have never worked before amass more wealth in less than 4 years than many in their life time occupational career”.

“With this body, their political party should have trained them in serious large-scale farming and assisted them to succeed with those huge lands in the north. They would become real millionaires who would really benefit the country. Instead, they are being trained to fight so that ‘corruption with impunity’ will return to govern Ghana with incompetence”, one X user added.

One last netizen added, “When Akufo-Addo was busy dissolving political vigilantes, NDC was preparing real thugs for election 2024. Thugs won them most of the parliamentary seats; now NPP ve gone back to the elementary. Waiting 4 de actions of  JDM. Act b4 diis country turns into a rebel state. Can he?NO!”
