The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the John Mahama government to urgently complete unfinished bypasses and ongoing works on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The NPP minority demands follows Monday’s fatal crash at the Birimso Bridge near Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region.
According to the Minority caucus, the proposed US$1.7 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project is an important long-term intervention, but immediate attention must be given to completing the existing highway.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, the Minority stated, “The Minority Caucus of Parliament has received with profound sorrow the news of the tragic road accident that occurred yesterday at Birimso bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. At least 13 people are feared dead following a devastating _multi-vehicle collision on the Kumasi – Acra Highway.
On behalf of the Minority Caucus, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We also sympathise with those who sustained injuries and wish them a speedy and full recovery. We share in the grief of the affected families and stand in solidarity with all those who have been impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.
This unfortunate incident is yet another painful reminder of the urgent need to address the longstanding safety challenges on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable. The Minority Caucus therefore makes a strong national appeal to the Government to urgently prioritise the completion of all ongoing sections of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, including the existing bypasses and other outstanding works,
We note that Government has committed US$1.7 billion for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, with these funds set aside in an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana. However, approximately US$300 million would be sufficient to complete the existing bypass and ongoing works on the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway.
While the long-term vision of constructing an expressway is commendable, the Minority Caucus believes that the immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now.
As fatal crashes continue to occur on this critical corridor, expediting these outstanding works should be treated as a matter of national urgency while preparations for the expressway continue”.
Meanwhile, reports suggest two people have been confirmed dead following a multi-vehicle collision involving a State Transport Company (STC) bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up and a Kia Sorento at Etukrom, near Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region.
Reports suggest the crash occurred on Monday, August 3, leaving the STC bus, the fuel tanker and the Mitsubishi pick-up completely burnt, while the Kia Sorento was extensively damaged.
The vehicles involved in the crash were: “A fuel tanker; A Mitsubishi pick-up with registration number GE 8602-17; A Kia Sorento with registration number GT 8601-14; and an STC bus with registration number GS 7050-22”.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Accra–Kumasi Highway following a multi-vehicle collision at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway.
The crash, involving a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a sedan, has completely blocked the road in both directions.
Motorists travelling to Accra are being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam, while those heading to Kumasi are being diverted through the Apedwa route.

There is a pile-up road crash at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway (Accra-Kumasi highway), involving a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a sedan, resulting in a complete blockade of the road for Accra and Kumasi-bound traffic.
The Eastern South Regional Police MTTD team from Kibi are at the scene and has temporarily diverted traffic through Kibi at Nsutam for Accra-bound traffic, and at Apedwa for Kumasi-bound traffic, today 3/08/2026.
We entreat motorists and other road users to cooperate with the officers on the ground as they work to restore normal traffic flow”.
Meanwhile, the driver of the STC bus involved in the multi-vehicle collision at the Birimso Bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has spoken about the tragic incident.
According to the STC driver, the bus was carrying 31 passengers at the time of the crash.
He disclosed that about 10 passengers managed to escape, while the rest were trapped and reportedly burnt to death.
Speaking in a viral video, the STC driver with blood stains on his dress and holding a side of his head stated, “We were about 31 people on the bus. The number of people we were able to get out was about 10, and the rest got burnt”.
