Tragedy has struck again for the family of the late Tamale Central MP Murtala Mohammed, as fire gutted their residence.
Reports suggest the fire affected nine out of 17 rooms and destroyed property valued at thousands of cedis.
Firefighters have since contained the blaze. The incident occurred just one day before a scheduled thanksgiving service for the MP and seven other victims of a fatal helicopter crash.
ADO I Hudu Baba, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), confirmed the incident.
He disclosed that the service received a distress call at 3:29 pm. Firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later, at 3:37 pm.
He added that upon arrival, fire crews successfully rescued two schoolchildren who were trapped inside one of the burning rooms before bringing the flames under control.
The GNFS has officially launched an investigation to establish the cause of the blaze and also to evaluate the full extent of the property damage.
It will be recalled that late Murtala Mohammed died on 6 August 2025 when a helicopter carrying an official delegation from Accra to the Ashanti Region crashed in the Adansi area.
Ghana lost eight people, including Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who passed away following a helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.
The helicopter was carrying eight individuals, including three crew members and five passengers, among them the ministers, a presidential staffer identified as Samuel Sarpong, and the ministers’ security detail.
Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC, have all been confirmed dead.
The crew members are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
In other news, a massive fire has gutted a rubber recycling warehouse and factory at the Tema Industrial Area.
Reports suggest several firefighters sustained injuries after the roof caved in during firefighting operations.
According to reports, the blaze started around 12:40 a.m. on August 4, 2026, and required four fire tenders from stations across Tema to bring it under control.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the GNFS’ heroic efforts had led to the successful extinguishing of the fire.
