Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has taken a subtle jab at members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah following his indirect description of her as a “nobody.”
The minority leader, responding to the criticism he has been facing following his comments, shared a video of the NDC’s 2024 #OccupyBoGDemo protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, drawing comparisons with the current situation.
Afenyo-Markin shared the video on Facebook and captioned it, “Just a gentle reminder to my NDC friends. Cc: Nana Yaa Jantuah”.
The video showed senior officials of the NDC who were then in opposition expressing discontent over who had been sent to receive their petition.
The then Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, expressed disappointment over the absence of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, and his deputies saying, “So, first, let me say that I feel very disrespected as the leader of the opposition in Parliament, for a simple reason that we demanded to present a petition to the Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Ghana, otherwise known as the Bank of Ghana.
The Governor has two deputies, namely Deputy 1 and Deputy 2. Unfortunately, he has decided to disrespect us, and his two deputies have also decided to disrespect us by not being here and to receive our petition”.
“We never said we are going to present our petition to the head of security or someone responsible for security, with all due respect. You are not the one responsible, and we will not give you our petition,” he added.
“Let me also say that, in summary, we will hold you accountable, particularly the Governor. We are demanding his exit, and now that he has decided to disrespect us, we will not present our petition. We will go and come back again. We will come back here again, and we will come back and demand to see him in person,” he had warned.
The development follows Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to assign only Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah to receive its petition during the party’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the government’s decision to assign only Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah to receive its petition is disrespectful to the party.
He argued that the NPP had sent its key leadership to present the petition as a sign of respect to the government.
Afenyo-Markin noted that the decision to send only Nana Yaa Jantuah to receive the document did not reflect the seriousness of the concerns raised by the party.
He highlighted that the delegation included the Minority leadership in Parliament, the NPP General Secretary, the Chief of Staff of the party’s flagbearer, the Chairman of the party’s Constitutional Committee, Members of Parliament and other senior party officials.
The minority added that the government’s action suggested that it did not attach importance to the issues raised by the demonstration.
Speaking during the presentation of the petition at the Presidency on Thursday, August 6, Mr Afenyo-Markin stated, “With great respect and without prejudice to your presence, to nominate only you to come amounts to disrespecting us as a political party”.
“But to disrespect our democracy by only nominating you to come, it means the government does not take seriously the great issues before us,” he stated.
