Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President, has said the government is dead serious about the Women’s Development Bank.
According to Prof Opoku-Agyemang, the government’s proposed Women’s Development Bank will play a critical role in extending financial support to women.
The vice president noted that the government remained committed to establishing the bank and was targeting a launch before the end of the year.
Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated, “We said we’ll do the Women’s Development Bank. We are dead serious about it,” she said, adding, “I’m hoping that before this year ends, we’d have launched it.”
“You go to any bank in this country, and there’s a women’s desk. Why does that exist? Even when you go to the women’s desk, which women normally go there?” she asked.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cited women who sell goods by the roadside, hawk items, saying, “Does it include this lady who went to get somebody’s doughnuts to hawk? Does she go to this bank? Where will this woman get her capital? How about her? She’s also a woman”.
“You must start with the things that affect everyone, like the economy, like security. These are fundamental. We must all feel safe. We must all get on with our lives. We must all get proper training to be able to contribute to that same economy,” she said.
“Our boss [President Mahama] is really, really working so hard to ensure that we are removing these obstacles from our paths.”
Meanwhile, the Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has disclosed that the government is awaiting the Bank of Ghana (BoG) licence to operationalise the Women’s Development Bank.
According to Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the company WDB Ghana Limited has been incorporated, and the government has subsequently applied to the Bank of Ghana for the licence.
He further disclosed that the Finance Minister in the 2026 mid-year fiscal policy review scheduled for next month will provide more updates on the Women Development Bank.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, the Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, detailed, “As the honourable member confirmed, GHS 51 million was allocated for this intervention in 2025. In addition, the government in the 2026 budget set aside GHS 450 million for this initiative”.
“I can confirm that a lot of preparatory work has been done. On the 26th of January 2026, the company WDB Ghana Limited was incorporated. The government has subsequently applied to the Bank of Ghana for the licence to operate the Women’s Development Bank”.
“I wish to assure the House, the Honourable Members, that the Minister for Finance will give a full update on this intervention as part of the mid-year fiscal policy review schedule for next month, July”.
Also, President John Mahama has said that his government’s flagship Women’s Development Bank is in the final stages.
According to John Mahama, the Women’s Development Bank had been under the leadership of Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
He highlighted that when women succeed, families thrive, and nations prosper.
Speaking in his address on Ghana’s 69th Independence Day Anniversary Celebration National Parade at the Forecourt of the Presidency in Accra, John Mahama stated, “Our women entrepreneurs have historically been the backbone of Ghana’s informal economy, and yet too many of them face barriers to affordable credit”.
“This Women’s Development Bank will provide accessible financing, mentorship, and business support that is tailored to women-led enterprises.”
“Women of Ghana are committed to investing so that you realise your full potential. Ghana’s destiny is inseparable from Africa’s destiny.”
