Labone robbery syndicate targeted GCB, Ecobank, Zenith

The Ghana Police Service has announced that Thursday’s incident at Labone in Accra involved a planned robbery attempt targeting three banks in the enclave.

According to the Police, the robbery syndicate was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located at Labone, when its operations were foiled.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, the Police detailed, “UPDATE ON FOILED ROBBERY ATTEMPT AT LABONE

The Ghana Police Service today arrested one suspect of a robbery syndicate and gunned down two others for planned robbery attempts on some banks in Labone, Accra.

At about 10:45 am today, 13th August, 2026, Police received intelligence that a gang of robbers were preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank and the Zenith Bank, all at Labone.

A police team was immediately deployed to Labone, where the gang members were spotted in their vehicles parked close to the banks.

Upon sighting the Police, one of the vehicles sped of in an attempt to escape. The Police gave them a chase and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The other occupant, however, managed to escape. The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing.

The Police engaged them in a shootout, resulting in the death of two suspects.

Police also recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander vehicle with registration number GS- 1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson vehicle with registration number GS 7915-17 and a blow pistol.

Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is in custody assisting the investigation while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Ghana Police Service highly commends the response team for successfully foiling the planned robbery attempt. The Service is also grateful to members of the public who continue to share credible information on criminal activities with the police”.

The updates follow an earlier statement by the Ghana Police Service, which announced that they have stopped an armed robbery attack in Labone, a suburb of the nation’s capital, Accra.

According to the Police, the robbery attack was foiled at the Labone Ghana Commercial Bank.

The police further disclosed that two suspects were gunned down, with one other arrested and taken into custody.

The Ghana Police Service today, 13th August, 2026,  foiled a robbery attempt on the GCB Bank, Labone, Accra. Two suspects have been gunned down, and one has been arrested.

However, the police disclosed that further details will be communicated.

In other news, the Ghana Police Service have arrested an Imam and a Pastor over separate videos containing comments considered offensive and inciting violence.

One of the suspects, a 35-year-old Imam, was arrested over comments he made during a sermon at a mosque in Ntensere in the Ashanti Region.

The second suspect was arrested over a video in which he made derogatory comments about Prophet Mohammed.

In a statement issued by the Police Service read, “The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has arrested suspect Masud Abdullah, aged 35, in connection with a video in which he made statements advocating violence against persons who speak ill of Prophet Mohammed.

According to information available to the Police, the suspect, an Imam, allegedly made the statements while delivering a sermon at a mosque at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.

In a related development, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team has arrested suspect Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei alias Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, who was seen in a video making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed.

Investigations are ongoing, and both suspects will be taken through the due process of the law.”
