Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has said the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has full confidence in his leadership of the NPP caucus in Parliament.
The Minority in a Facebook post revealed that he held a meeting at Dr Bawumia’s private residence in Accra to discuss party matters.
According to Afenyo-Markin, Dr Bawumia urged him and the Minority to remain focused.
He revealed that Dr Bawumia has called on the Minority, under his leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for the $1.7 billion loss arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
In a Facebook post on Monday, August 24, Afenyo-Markin wrote, “I held a meeting this morning with the Flag-Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at his private residence in Accra.
We discussed party matters and the agenda before the Minority as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting called by the Speaker.
Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority. He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report. He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it.
He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss. He commended the Minority for its efforts so far.
I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people. I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today.
We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve”.
In other news, Solomon Owusu and Andrew Appiah-Danquah, two bigwigs of the United Party (UP), have filed a joint petition seeking a criminal investigation into Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over an alleged $1 million extortion demand.
The two have said the extortion claims against the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, must be investigated as a criminal case.
They argued that the allegations, even if accompanied by a hint of a civil suit from the MP, are far too serious to be left to civil litigation alone.
According to them, the extortion allegations against the Minority Leader are a worrying development that must not be allowed to end without an investigation.
The party has petitioned six state institutions to launch a formal probe into the $1 million claim.
The petition named the Attorney General, Special Prosecutor, Speaker Bagbin, CHRAJ, IGP and the CID.
The UP bigwigs are demanding, “Determine whether the alleged demand was connected with a threat of reputational injury, adverse publication, prosecution, parliamentary action, political pressure or any other act or forbearance;
Determine whether any public office, parliamentary position or institutional authority was employed or threatened as leverage in furtherance of the alleged demand;
Determine whether the evidence discloses attempted extortion, corruption, abuse of public office, conspiracy, abetment or any related offence;
Institute the appropriate criminal, disciplinary, parliamentary, civil recovery or other proceedings if the allegations are substantiated
Communicate an appropriate conclusion if the allegations are not substantiated; and
Take such further lawful action as may be necessary to vindicate constitutional accountability, deter the abuse of public power and preserve public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions”
