The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has revealed that it has received three petitions in connection with allegations of extortion against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The OSP announced that the anti-corruption agency will assess the allegations of extortion and related conduct against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
In a press release, the OSP acknowledged that the allegations have attracted public attention, adding that they have received petitions in connection with the matter.
According to the OSP, they have received a joint petition from two individuals concerning the allegations.
The OSP also confirmed receiving two separate petitions from other individuals relating to the same matter.
In a press release issued on Monday, August 24, the anti-corruption agency stated, “Allegations of Extortion Against the Minority Leader of Parliament.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has taken note of public allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The OSP also acknowledges a joint petition submitted by two persons, as well as two separate petitions submitted by other persons, in relation to the allegations.
Given the nature of the allegations, the OSP will assess the case and determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted”.
In the meantime, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has broken his silence on whether he would be going to court over allegations made against him by the CEO of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, who accused him of being an extortionist.
Afenyo-Markin appears to have softened his earlier threat to pursue legal action over allegations made by Sammy Gyamfi.
The Minority leader on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday evening, August 23, declined to commit himself to legal action, instead invoking the biblical example of Jesus Christ.
According to Afenyo-Markin, in the Bible, Jesus was accused with wild allegations, but he kept quiet and watched them.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Afenyo-Markin stated, “I have made certain statements. I would rely on them without more. Don’t rush. In the Bible, Jesus was accused; wild allegations. He kept quiet and watched them. He could have done anything.”
“But you see, when you are dealing with situations, the people of Ghana expect a certain level of maturity from me. The people of Ghana see that this is an accomplished businessman. He’s been in the space for some time. He’s leading a group. The tradition of the party NPP that I lead expects a certain level of conduct.”
“So if I would be carried away with emotions, I would fail. It’s not an emotional game. It’s not a game that somebody attacks you; you should also react. No, you won’t get it.”
“There is always a bait in politics, and don’t underestimate it. Opponents also have a strategy,” he added.
“I was a majority leader. I know how government operates. I know how government can divert attention. So I’ve been there. Because the government must hold itself together, so it can be thrown in today’s social media. Let’s divert attention. Let’s stain the man.”
Meanwhile, Solomon Owusu and Andrew Appiah-Danquah, two bigwigs of the United Party (UP), have filed a joint petition seeking a criminal investigation into Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over an alleged $1 million extortion demand.
The two have said the extortion claims against the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, must be investigated as a criminal case.
They argued that the allegations, even if accompanied by a hint of a civil suit from the MP, are far too serious to be left to civil litigation alone.
According to them, the extortion allegations against the Minority Leader are a worrying development that must not be allowed to end without an investigation.
The party has petitioned six state institutions to launch a formal probe into the $1 million claim.
The petition named the Attorney General, Special Prosecutor, Speaker Bagbin, CHRAJ, IGP and the CID.
The UP bigwigs are demanding, “Determine whether the alleged demand was connected with a threat of reputational injury, adverse publication, prosecution, parliamentary action, political pressure or any other act or forbearance;
Determine whether any public office, parliamentary position or institutional authority was employed or threatened as leverage in furtherance of the alleged demand;
Determine whether the evidence discloses attempted extortion, corruption, abuse of public office, conspiracy, abetment or any related offence;
Institute the appropriate criminal, disciplinary, parliamentary, civil recovery or other proceedings if the allegations are substantiated
Communicate an appropriate conclusion if the allegations are not substantiated; and
Take such further lawful action as may be necessary to vindicate constitutional accountability, deter the abuse of public power and preserve public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions”
