Henry Quartey, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called for the removal of tricycles from Accra’s roads.
According to Henry Quartey, the rapidly increasing numbers of tricycles could soon overwhelm the city’s streets if urgent action is not taken.
The former Greater Accra Regional Minister warned that the proliferation risks turning the capital into a congested city like Mumbai, India, within five years.
Speaking in an interview with Neat FM on August 25, 2026, Henry Quartey stated, “I remember an NDC member who is now a minister questioning me over the use of aboboyaa on our roads.
Tell me the impact we have gained from using these tricycles. Why do we have to allow these tricycles on our streets? Mark these words down. If we don’t stop the use of these tricycles, give me five years, Accra will be like Mumbai.”
He continued, “Just yesterday, I was using the Adjoriganor road and right in front of the road to former President Rawlings’ house, there were over 40 parked tricycles there, and it kept me wondering.”
Some Ghanaians reacting to the development stated, “It’s already like that o father hm.
I mean how did we even get here??? These things are used in DENSELY POPULATED CITIES!!! In ‘third world countries’. We may be associated with the latter, but we definitely are not densely packed here!!! Let the rails work!! It’s just that….”.
One X user added, “I always laugh when people try and diss other places as if Accra or Ghana (or even other WA countries) are some beacons of development & order.
Some parts of Mumbai are definitely bad, others much better & compared to Accra & its small burden of 4 million ppl which one is worse?”
A netizen added, “I’ve always say this. Not only in Accra, but in the Ashanti Region, especially Kumasi, it is very scary. Instead of using the main lane, they ride in the middle of the road as if they are like a motorbike, breaking car mirrors. They should at least operate in small towns where there is less traffic, rather than on the highway”.
“So he’s just gonna remove them and replace them with nothing? So rich people like him can drive to work and other places whilst the average Ghanaian walks or take okada ? Lol he doesn’t even have a plan to replace it, he just wants to put people out of business”, one X user added.
An X user added, “Both of you who commented are not forward thinkers. You use “there’s no work” as a basis to defend every wrong thing. Someone is proposing a solution to make Accra better, and you are here insulting him. SMH”
“My issues with this type of comment are that they had the opportunity to change this, but they wouldn’t; it’s only when they lose power that they have the best of ideas”, a netizen added.
Additionally, one last X user added, “Make the clearance of Toyota Vitz affordable to the people. Some years back, with 20kgh you could acquire a Vitz; today it’s about 120k. If Vitz is affordable, they will purchase that for the transport business”.
