Henry Quartey, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has revealed how his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), rejected his plan to relocate spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai in his bid to transform the area into a modern West Africa Automobile Hub.

According to Henry Quartey, he travelled to Dubai, where he studied how the city had developed its automobile spare parts market.

Henry Quartey noted that Dubai also has a commercial hub similar to Abossey Okai, but unlike Ghana’s spare parts hub, Dubai’s spare parts hub was clean and well organised.

He disclosed that after he visited Dubai, he engaged the chiefs, traditional leaders and some shop owners at Abossey Okai about relocating the spare parts dealers and transforming the area into a modern automobile hub.

According to him, the traditional leaders and some of the stakeholders welcomed the idea and were happy about the proposed development, adding that his own party, the NPP, opposed his vision over fears of losing the election in the area.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM, Henry Quartey stated, “I travelled to Dubai, and I went there to do a good study of what they have. Dubai also has a place like ‘Abossey Okai’, but you would not see even a drop of engine oil on the floor. They have shelves made of metal where they place engines and other second-hand spare parts. So, when you get there, the place is very neat”.

“I wanted to develop the place into a modern hub where the shop owners could have proper planning, because as the place is now, shop owners don’t even have washrooms there. I spoke to the traditional leaders, and they thought it was a beautiful idea. But then my own party went and said that if we touched Abossey Okai, we would lose the election. Didn’t we lose Ablekuma South? We lost,” he stated.

Some Ghanaians reacting to his comments stated, “Politics has destroyed everything in this country, and it’s sad! This was a very brilliant idea, and our own people stood against it”.

A TikToker added, “This man wanted to bring sanity, but dem no allow am”.

One last netizen added, “Politicians have the solutions to all the problems we are facing in this country, but they will simply NOT do it because of the selfish interest of one or two people! It’s very sad”

In other news, Henry Quartey has called for the removal of tricycles from Accra’s roads.

According to Henry Quartey, the rapidly increasing numbers of tricycles could soon overwhelm the city’s streets if urgent action is not taken.

The former Greater Accra Regional Minister warned that the proliferation risks turning the capital into a congested city like Mumbai, India, within five years.

Speaking in an interview with Neat FM on August 25, 2026, Henry Quartey stated, “I remember an NDC member who is now a minister questioning me over the use of aboboyaa on our roads.

Tell me the impact we have gained from using these tricycles. Why do we have to allow these tricycles on our streets? Mark these words down. If we don’t stop the use of these tricycles, give me five years, Accra will be like Mumbai.”

He continued, “Just yesterday, I was using the Adjoriganor road and right in front of the road to former President Rawlings’ house, there were over 40 parked tricycles there, and it kept me wondering.”
