Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, a Statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration nearly pushed Ghana back to military rule.

According to  Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, Ghana under the Akufo-Addo administration was dangling and on the brink of falling back into military rule.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe recounted that two senior military officers, the late General Ashley-Larsen and General Nunu Mensah, engaged then-President Akufo-Addo to offer their advice in the interest of the country’s security.

He disclosed that the two generals believed the general situation in the country required their intervention because Ghana was “walking into the hands of the military.”

Speaking in an interview on Onua TV on September 8, 2026, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, “When Akufo-Addo became president of this country, and this nation was walking into the hands of the military, two generals decided to have a chat with Akufo-Addo and advise because of the safety of this country.

“Late General Ashley Larson was, I think, the oldest general left at that time and General Nunu Mensah. They got in touch through the presidents, you know, as usual when certain things you have to pass it through somebody to get it. He was informed”.

You know the response that came from my good friend Nana Akufo-Addo”.

He further added, “General Nunu Mensah said he was driving somewhere around Cantonment when he had the call, so he parked the car and on the other side of the phone was one of the ministers. I think it was then the National Security Minister. The person was rather telling him that the President would like them to talk to the security services. Can you believe that? Two generals”.

He added, “So, what happened? There are no kids. Even in age, they are far, far older than us. So, they decided just to leave it, and we were dangling like this, dangling,” he said.

“The whole nation was dangling, and we should thank God that we are still a nation,” he stated.

In related news, in 2025, President John Mahama told the National Peace Council at the Jubilee House that Ghana is not immune to a coup d’état.

According to John Mahama, Ghana is not immune to coup d’état, which is why his government is doing their best to make sure that they regain the trust of the people.

He stressed that democratic governance must let citizens have faith that it can deliver development.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the National Peace Council at the Jubilee House on December 10, President John Mahama stated, “For those of us who practice democratic governance, we must let our people have faith that democratic governance can deliver the kinds of opportunity and development that they are looking for”.

“You see a certain cynicism where young people said, even this voting is useless. I go and vote every four years, and I don’t see what difference it makes in our lives,” he said.

He cautioned, “One of my major campaign messages was that we have a last opportunity to keep the faith and trust of our people in the political elites. Otherwise, Ghana is not immune to coup d’états”.

President Mahama added, “I don’t enjoy prosecuting people, but the people of Ghana will not forgive us if people develop impunity in terms of abusing the trust that people have put in them”.

“That is why we are resourcing the Economic and Organised Crime Office and the other anti-corruption institutions, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he added.
