Dr Clemence Gyato has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the controversial demolition and reported forceful takeover of the Accra Race Course at Borteyman.
Reports suggest Dr Gyato was arrested on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as the CID works to determine the circumstances surrounding the August 22 demolition.
According to the police, Dr Gyato is currently in police custody assisting investigators with no criminal liability established against him.
In a statement issued on X, the police stated, “POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN CONNECTION WITH UNLAWFUL DEMOLITION AT RACE COURSE
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has today, 10th September 2026, arrested Dr. Clemence Gyato in connection with the unlawful demolition of buildings and structures belonging to the Accra Race Course at Borteyman in Accra.
The suspect is currently in Police custody assisting investigations as the CID works to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident”.
The development comes on the heels of the Ghana Police Service interdicting DSP Alhassan Malaika Jibril over his alleged involvement in the operation.
DSP Alhassan Malaika Jibril was accused of providing security for, and leading personnel involved in, the demolition exercise at the race course.
Reports suggest that about 200 armed men arrived at the facility on August 22 with an excavator and nine bulldozers. More than 100 horse stables were reportedly demolished, while track railings and other infrastructure at the historic venue were also destroyed.
The development sparked strong condemnation from the Accra Turf Club and other stakeholders who demanded investigations into the authority behind the demolition and takeover of the property.
Also, on Thursday, pressure intensified with members of the horse racing community staging demonstrations in Accra and petitioning the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Sports and the Presidency.
The demonstrators demanded critical government action to protect the facility and determine how the demolition and reported takeover were carried out.
Meanwhile, Gyato’s arrest is expected to form part of the CID’s efforts to identify those behind the operation as the investigation is ongoing.
