The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called for an immediate, probe into the death of a lecturer at the Gbewa College of Education, who reportedly died after being alledely beaten by military personnel during curfew hours.
CETAG in a statement issued on Monday, September 14 argued that curfew violation can never justify beating a person to death.
They disclosed that information available to them suggests that the alleged assault resulted in Abdulai Issaka’s death, describing the circumstances as deeply disturbing.
“Being outside during curfew hours, irrespective of the circumstances, can never justify the beating of a person to death,” the Association said.
They further condemned the use of excessive and lethal force and called for a thorough investigation to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged incident.
CETAG also called on the Government, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the CHRAJ and other relevant state institutions to ensure that the matter is investigated without intimidation.
“No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law,” CETAG said.
The Association further appealed for calm at the Gbewa College of Education, urging management, staff and students to exercise restraint.
CETAG also extended its condolences to Issaka’s family, colleagues and friends while describing his death as a painful loss.
The development follows, Military personnel deployed to the Bawku area have allegedly beaten a lecturer at Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga in the Upper East Region to death.
The deceased has been identified as Issaka Abdulai, who was a lecturer with the college’s Science Department.
His death was confirmed by the management of the institution in a statement issued on September 12, 2026, saying he died after an alleged incident involving military personnel on the night of Friday, September 11.
The Gbewaa College of Education, nevertheless, did not provide details about what led to the alleged assault or the circumstances surrounding Abdulai’s death.
However, Citi News reported that the lecturer was allegedly arrested while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
Issaka Abdulai’s subsequent death triggered protests in Pusiga on Saturday morning, with residents taking to the streets to express their anger.
According to reports, some protesters blocked roads and set tyres on fire as they demanded answers over the lecturer’s death and the conduct of security personnel operating in the area.
Meanwhile, the incident has renewed concerns among residents about the treatment of civilians amid ongoing security operations in the Bawku area.
Also, the management of Gbewaa College of Education has expressed concern over the death of its staff member.
In the meantime, no official information has been released on any investigation into the alleged assault or the circumstances that led to Abdulai’s death.
