Maurice Ampaw, a Legal practitioner and media personality, has criticised some top members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), for smiling and chit-chatting with business mogul Ibrahim Mahama at the funeral of Peter Mac Manu’s wife over the weekend.
According to Maurice Ampaw, NPP stalwarts should stop being hypocritical; he stressed that their warm interaction with Ibrahim Mahama was a “piss-off” to some party foot soldiers.
Maurice Ampaw argued that Ibrahim Mahama had what it took to prevent Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, from going to jail, but he looked on while he was sentenced to imprisonment.
Speaking on Movement TV, Maurice Ampaw stated, “To those NPP executives who, when Ibrahim Mahama came to the funeral and were smiling and chit-chatting with him, that is a piss-off to some of our party foot soldiers. Stop the hypocrisy. For me, there’s no way I will see Ibrahim Mahama and get close to him. That’s my life. I don’t hate him, but I don’t like someone who is a hypocrite”.
“How can Ibrahim Mahama and co allow Wontumi to be jailed when he has what it takes to save Wontumi? I am the lawyer for Wontumi against Ibrahim Mahama, so I know what I am talking about when I say he has what it takes to save Wontumi,” he said.
“They swore to deal with Wontumi, and now they have fulfilled it. Today, they are at a funeral, and you NPP executives allow Ibrahim Mahama to be in your midst, shake hands with you and chit-chat with you. How would Wontumi feel?” he asked.
He further alleged that Ibrahim Mahama is trying to “play smart” with both major political parties by maintaining relationships with individuals on both sides so that nobody can hold him accountable when government changes because of those relationships.
According to him, anyone who played a role in the imprisonment of Chairman Wontumi would be considered an enemy and would never be his friend.
Maurice Ampaw stated, “Ibrahim Mahama is trying to play smart with both parties, NDC and NPP, so that when the government changes, nobody can touch him”.
“For me, anybody who played a role in jailing Chairman Wontumi, including the judge who presided over the case, even though she was my classmate, is not my friend. If I see her, I will pass her by. But for jailing Wontumi at that speed, she has become my enemy for life,” he added.
In related news, Prophet Kofi Oduro, the Founder and Leader of Alabaster International Ministries, has quizzed the sense behind the 20-year prison sentence handed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) former Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The man of God expressed disappointment over the imprisonment of Wontumi, arguing that the 20-year prison sentence was not in the best interest of the country.
He noted that the government will now have to spend taxpayers’ money on his feeding and welfare while he serves his sentence.
According to Prophet Kofi Oduro, Wontumi should have been given an option: 20 years or 10 billion dollars payback to reclaim the lands he helped destroy with his galamsey activities.
Speaking in a sermon shared on social media with his congregation, Prophet Kofi Oduro stated, “What is the use of Wontumi being in prison for 20 years? We should have given that guy options: 20 years or 10 billion dollars payback. He will definitely choose the latter. What is the sense of Wontumi being in Nsawam Prison? It’s true he has committed a crime, but give him an option, give him an option to pay back.
“Now that he is in Nsawam for 20 years, what is the sense of it? He has offended the law, yes, but he should be given an option to pay back. The Nation needs that money back to go and reclaim that land.
The judiciary should give the guy an option. 20 years or pay back; nobody will take 20 years. Let him sell everything he has made to pay back, but for him to sit there while we waste money on him is nonsense,” he said.
