Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has said Form One students could be given additional time to report if all outstanding cases involving the challenges with the Senior High School (SHS) placement system are not resolved by the end of the week.
Speaking during a visit to the National Resolution Centre in Accra, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu made this known.
He stated, “Reopening date, I’ll come back here. When we are not able to deal with all these issues, I ask the GES not to hesitate, but we will give them room.”
Haruna Iddrisu also called on officials at the resolution centre to exercise patience, tolerance and understanding.
The Education Minister also revealed that the government would also pursue longer-term measures to address recurring placement challenges.
“We have vacancies in A, B and C, but more in C to B in a graduated manner to A. Our government will fix this crisis with time. We have to invest long-term in infrastructure,” he said.
He further revealed that about 527,000 of the 604,000 students who qualified for placement had so far secured places in Senior High Schools.
The development follows the Education Ministry, which had earlier extended the 2026 Senior High School (SHS) placement exercise by at least one week.
The one-week extension is to give students with outstanding placement issues more time to secure schools before the reopening date.
According to the Education Ministry, the extension will allow students undertaking self-placement or seeking changes to their residential status to complete the process ahead of the September 18 reopening.
They disclosed that the resolution centres across the country will remain open from Monday to Friday.
The Education Ministry noted that significant progress had already been made in resolving the challenges.
The Education Minister, press secretary Hashmin Mohammed, speaking to JoyNews, stated, “Out of the 53,887 category of self-placement students, we have had 33,726 who have been able to self-place themselves into various schools and out of 9,948 reported cases at the resolution centres throughout the country, the CSSPS Secretariat has been able to resolve 4,531 so far”.
“The resolution centres will remain active from Monday till Friday, and we are hoping that by Friday, the numbers should be able to go down because on September 18, they will report to school,” he added.
