Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said he is suspicious that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could be involved in connections to the recent illegal drug activities.
According to Mustapha Gbande, an illegal drug bust is a concern for every Ghanaian. Adding that anyone involved is an enemy of the state.
He, however, noted that the Presidency had initiated steps to tighten security at Ghana’s borders and identify officials who may have enabled drug-related activities.
Speaking on Asempa FM on September 22, 2026, Gbande stated, “The illegal drug bust is a matter of concern for every Ghanaian. Anyone involved is an enemy of the state. It is a national concern”.
“My biggest consolation is that we have a President who is willing to deal with issues carefully and properly, not in a rush. Mahama wants to understand the problem,” he said.
Gbande further questioned the NPP’s reported plans to organise protests over the drug bust.
He argued that the matter should be left to the appropriate institutions to investigate rather than being turned into a political campaign.
He added, “The responsibility is a national one. It is not about press conferences. The NPP should understand that this is a national concern”.
“If the NPP wants to be on the street, I am beginning to suspect that it is some of their members that may have done it,” he alleged.
“This is a country of rules. Mahama is not a knee-jerk President. We are not solving this to please the NPP,” he added.
His comment follows Henry Nana Boakye, commonly known as Nana B, the National Organiser of the NPP has alleged that drug lords have established labs in Ghana.
According to Nana B, the NPP’s intelligence gathered suggests drug traffickers have established clandestine laboratories in Ghana which are used to process narcotics for export.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the opposition NPP on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Henry Nana Boakye stated, “These drug lords, they have established basic laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama”.
“And it appears that he doesn’t care.”
“That is the reason why volumes of drugs traced to Ghana keep surfacing in the folds of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk and Johannesburg,” he said.
He further alleged that some government officials were facilitating the movement of narcotics out of the country.
Nana B also cited the cocaine case involving Nayele Ametefe during the previous Mahama administration.
“Ghanaians have not forgotten the Naa Ayele Ametefe scandal under the first Mahama administration where this drug trafficker was afforded the courtesy of the VVIP wing at the Kotoka International Airport before her arrest at Heathrow with cocaine in her bags,” he said.
“Today, under the second Mahama term, the same pattern has resurfaced. The same process has remained, and it has grown to be much worse,” he said.
“Some within our borders, others involving Ghanaians and Ghana-linked consignments intercepted abroad,” he said.
“This is not an isolated embarrassment; it is a pattern. And patterns demand accountability.”
