Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has clarified his earlier comments he made about claims that cocaine is being manufactured in Ghana.
According to the Manhyia South lawmaker, he did not make the claim as his own during an interview with Citi FM.
He disclosed that he only repeated a position earlier presented by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye.
In a statement issued on his Facebook post, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah stated, “My attention has been drawn to several stories online suggesting that in an interview I granted to Citi FM on September 22, 2026, I personally alleged that cocaine is being manufactured in Ghana.
“It is worth noting that in the said interview, I only reiterated the position of my party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as delivered by its National Organiser in a press conference held on September 22, 2026”.
“It is also worthy of note that I made it clear that the party’s position, as highlighted in the press conference by the National Organiser, was informed by intelligence the party receives,” he said.
“It is crucial to recognise that the NPP is a formidable party and certainly let no one underestimate the intelligence available to the NPP,” he added.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah clarification comes after reports suggested that he had personally alleged that cocaine was being manufactured in Ghana.
According to Nana Agyei Baffour, Ghana is not only a transit point for cocaine smuggling, but there is some level of manufacturing ongoing in the country.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday, the NPP MP, when asked whether his party’s claim was “theory or a fact”, stated, “Fact based on intelligence.”
“There’s some degree, some level of manufacturing in here… It’s a fact based on intelligence… Don’t underestimate the New Patriotic Party as a major political party. People give us information,” he added.
The NPP legislator added, “It is on this basis that an enquiry is very necessary, because if it is established, like we have been informed by way of our intelligence, that indeed there is a manufacturing hub in this country, then it’s a very serious matter.
“If it is also established that indeed there is an importation, it is also equally a very serious matter,” he said.
When pushed to disclose the location of the hub, Nana Agyei Baffour disclosed that he couldn’t do so publicly.
The MP also refused to state whether the NPP had informed the nation’s security apparatus about its intelligence.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga has said the sharp increase in recent narcotics arrests and seizures is due to strategic measures introduced by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and other security agencies under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
James Agalga disclosed that NACOC recorded a significant rise in enforcement activities in 2025 compared with the previous year.
The Majority leader revealed that NACOC recorded 73 arrests nationwide in 2024, which was its highest annual enforcement figure at the time adding that the the number increased to 217 arrests across 165 cases in 2025.
According to him, the 197% increase reflected stronger enforcement operations, improved inter-agency collaboration.
The majority leader also disclosed that narcotics seizures also increased in 2025, with 1,497.75 kilogrammes of narcotic substances seized at an estimated street value of US$5.24 million.
He further revealed that asset-based enforcement operations resulted in the seizure of GH¢6.93 million and US$440,382 in cash, as well as 19.72 kilogrammes of gold allegedly linked to suspected drug-money laundering.
James Agalga added that NACOC had increased its District Commands from fewer than 10 to 77, extending the Commission’s presence to all 16 regions.
The Majority leader stated, “In 2024, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) recorded 73 arrests nationwide. Then the Commission’s most productive enforcement year on record under this government. NACOC enforcement operations in 2025 produced 217 arrests across 165 cases, an increase of 197 percent.
So let’s compare the figures, 73 arrests versus 217 arrests across 165 cases. And in percentage terms, we are looking at a 197 percent increase between the arrests effected in 2024 and the arrests effected in 2025.”
He stated, “The 2025 performance was due to the concrete institutional changes this government has put in place”.
